NOTE: For the next two months, the SUPERMAN FAN PODCAST will be on a bi-weekly schedule.
It’s a brand new year, which means it’s time for our annual YEAR IN REVIEW episode for the SUPERMAN titles I read in 2016. This is not a review of the entire line of SUPERMAN titles published by DC Comics last year, only the ones I followed. The issues covered in this episode were all published during the calendar year of 2016, carrying the cover dates of March 2016 through February 2017. I did not go by cover date. Time stamps are listed in parentheses for each segment.

– (7:34) New 52 Superman: ACTION COMICS 48 – 52 and SUPERMAN 48 – 52, March – July 2016 cover dates.

– (20:37) SUPERMAN: LOIS & CLARK issues 4 – 8, March – July 2016 cover dates.

– (30:41) SUPERMAN: COMING OF THE SUPERMEN, a six issue mini-series, cover date May – September 2016. NOTE: During the episode I mistakenly referred to this mini-series as SUPERMAN: RISE OF THE SUPERMEN.

– (38:32) DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH (one shot), cover date July 2016.

– (44:50) SUPERMAN REBIRTH 1 (one shot), cover date August 2016 and ACTION COMICS, issues 957 – 970, cover dates August 2016 – February 2017. NOTE: with the REBIRTH issues, ACTION COMICS returned to its original numbering.

– (55:27) SUPERMAN 1 – 13 cover dates August 2016 – February 2017. NOTE: with the REBIRTH issues, SUPERMAN began with a new number one issue.

– (1:09:13) SUPERWOMAN 1 – 5, cover dates October 2016 – February 2017.

– (1:15:05) I reveal my favorite issues and stories from 2016.

The next episode of the podcast will be released the week of Wednesday, February 15, 2017 featuring: SUPERMAN FAMILY COMIC BOOKS COVER DATED SEPTEMBER 1963: PART I: SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN 71 & PART II: WORLD’S FINEST COMICS 136!

Comic Timing – Episode 176: A Raging Review of 2015

ant-man-1435327553

Just like that, 2015 has shrunk in between the atoms, never to be seen again! In its place stands 2016, which also happens to be the 10th year of Comic Timing. And what better way to start off this milestone year than with two of Brent and Ian’s mos regular guests: Sean Whelan and Jim Segulin of the Raging Bullets podcast! The crew of four go over Secret Wars and Convergence, some of their favorite comics and comic related media of this past year, and some things that are older than that but were discovered in 2015. There’s also a decent amount of Star Wars talk to be had, including everyone’s (except for Jim who hasn’t seen it yet) overall impressions of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Plus, random segues into talking about meatloaf the food, Meatloaf the singer, and Fuller House. And, shock of shocks, we mention Fant4stic. It’s a grand old time, I tells ya! WHATISH!

As always – we are sponsored by the newly redesigned DCBS! That’s right! Discount Comic Book Service! All comics from major publishers like Marvel, DC, Image and Dark Horse are 40% off or more. And hardcovers and trade paperbacks from Marvel and DC are at least 50% off! Plus, be sure to check out their Comixology digital storefront for even further savings!

Stay tuned in the upcoming weeks for information on our Patreon, which should be launching right at the begnning of February. If you want to support Comic Timing and help keep it going for years to come, that’s one of the many ways you can do so. You can e-mail the show at comictiming@gmail.com and be sure to Like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/ComicTiming. Savage FINcast – Episode 27: A Banner Year

unnamedWith a “Bold New Direction” right around the corner, the Savage FINcast takes some time to reflect back on the events that occurred in Savage Dragon during the past year. Craig, Jim, and Raven are on board to count down 2013’s most memorable Savage Dragon moments as well as discuss other favorite comics that they read over the past year. It was a year to remember as Dragon was put on death row, his race was decimated, and his powers were stripped. Not that it was any less exciting for Malcolm who had relationship highs and lows, witnessed deadly new villains vie for control of Chicago, and prepared to move out on his own. Join us as we celebrate a true banner year for the Savage Dragon series, in this episode of the Savage FINcast!

All that, and our regular “Erik Larsen News” and “Savage Dragon Trivia” segments as well! As always, we would love to hear from you! Drop us a line at SAVAGEFINCAST (at) GMAIL (dot) COM to comment about the show, or suggest future discussion ideas. We will most likely read your letter on the next episode.

Supermanfanpodcast Logo

Because of holiday family celebrations and work schedules, there was little time to prepare of post the final two scheduled episodes of 2013. So I decided to do this episode, scheduled to be the final one of 2013, to begin 2014, followed by the next regularly scheduled silver age Superman story episode.

To review the Man of Steel in comic books, I cover:

– SUPERMAN 15 – 25 and SUPERMAN ANNUAL 2. (SUPERMAN 26 was released on Tuesday, December 31, 2013, but I was not able to go to my local comic book shop, Acme Superstore, until today, Saturday, January 4, 2014.

– ACTION COMICS 16 – 26 and ACTION COMICS ANNUAL 2.

– SUPERMAN UNCHAINED 1 – 4. (SUPERMAN UNCHAINED 5 was published on the same day as SUPERMAN 26, but I was unable to go to my local comic book shop before the end of the year.

I also briefly discuss my trip to the Superman Celebration in Metropolis, Illinois, which I covered in the multi-part Episode 271Part IPart IIPart IIIPart IVPart V & Part VI. Next I highlight my thoughts on the film MAN OF STEEL, which premiered the week after the Superman Celebration, and I originally reviewed in Episode 272.

I also highlight some of my pop culture Christmas gifts, as well as the pop culture Christmas gifts I bought for my family.

Next episode, I resume my regularly scheduled trip through the time barrier to explore the silver age adventures of Superman with the: SUPERMAN COMIC BOOK COVER DATED NOVEMBER 1962 PART I: SUPERMAN 157, which was originally scheduled to be released on Christmas week 2013.

The following week: SUPERMAN COMIC BOOK COVER DATED NOVEMBER 1962 PART II; ACTION COMICS 294!

On the fourth week of January: SUPERMAN FAMILY COMIC BOOK COVER DATED JANUARY 1960 PART I: SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE 14!

Comics Alternative Podcast Episode 67: Our Favorite Comics of 2013

Our Favorites…’Nuf Said!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. And no, this isn’t really a reference to much mistltoeing and hearts that are glowing. It’s  better than that. It’s time for

Andy and Derek’s end-of-the-year top ten favorites episode!

Best2013The Two Guys with PhDs (who talk about comics) like to end the year by highlighting their favorite titles of the past twelve months. These could be ongoing series, limited runs or miniseries, one-shots, trades, original graphic novels, webcomics, or archival collections. So for this week’s episode, Derek and Andy each choose their favorite ten comics from 2013 and then share that list with one another. They don’t necessarily rank them in any order — although Andy does reveal the #1 title on his list — and neither knows of the other’s ten favorites before they record the podcast. As such, the Guys not only have a great time discussing the year’s best comics, but also in discovering what each other feels is truly his favorite. There are a few overlaps between Andy and Derek’s choices, but even more significantly,  there are some big surprises in each one’s list!

Andy’s Top 10 of 20132013-1

Derek’s Top 10 of 20132013-2

The Honorable Mentions…These Titles Almost, but Just Didn’t Quite, Make It onto either Derek and Andy’s Lists

For Derek:

For Andy:

Hey Kids! Fun Facts!

  • The most represented publisher on both guys’ lists is First Second!
  • Andy chose more series than Derek did!
  • DC/Vertigo and Drawn and Quarterly show up a lot on Derek’s lists!
  • Andy’s been reading a lot of First Second titles!
  • Derek’s very surprised that Marble SeasonThe Property, or The Amazing, Enlightening and Absolutely True Adventures of Katherine Whaley didn’t appear on his Top 10 list!
  • There’s a Jonathan Hicks groove going on with Andy!
  • Several creators on The Guys’ 2013 list — Matt Fraction, Brian K. Vaughn, Bill Willingham, Jonathan Hickman, Gilbert Hernandez, and Matt Kindt — were also on their 2012 lists!

So start roasting those chestnuts and come experience the joy this holiday season by listening to Andy and Derek’s special year-end podcast!

holiday obscura collected by Andy Cirzan!

Comics Alternative Podcast Episode 66.1: A Discussion of the Year in Review at Collected Comics

Looking Back at 2013

For this month’s on-location show, Derek heads back to Collected Comics in Plano, TX, to talk with Shea Hennum and other shop employees about the past year in comics. The conversation begins with a look at some of the highlights from 2013, the best titles to come out of the year, movies and television programs based on comics, and some of the most memorable publishing events — or just events, in general — in comics. Shea and Derek also discuss some of the trends they saw developing over the past twelve months, including the impressive output of such major creators as Paul Pope and Gilbert Hernandez. Without turning too negative, they also mention some of the disappointments or lackluster moments from 2013, but then they counterbalance that with their hopes for new things that will be coming out in 2014. This is the perfect show to set the stage for Andy and Derek’s much-anticipated end-of-the-year episode, where they will share what they consider to be the best titles in 2013.

This episode’s incidental music comes to us through the
holiday obscura discovered by Andy Cirzan!

This is the 5th Year In Review episode for this podcast! Time flies when you’re having fun. 2012 was the first full year of the New 52 DC Universe. This episode will highlight the story lines of first ACTION COMICS then SUPERMAN, beginning with issues 5 through 15 for ACTION, and issue 14 for SUPERMAN, including the 0 issue and both Annuals. Coming up in 2013 will be my annual coverage of MegaCon, and for the first time ever I will attend the Superman Celebration! Future episodes will also feature this festival.
