Comics Alternative Interviews: Brian K. Vaughan

BKV Is in the House

BKVThe guys are pleased to have on their podcast the great Brian K. Vaughan. And for this conversation, Derek and Andy K. are joined by Andy Wolverton, who actually secured this interview for the show through his library connections. The guys begin by asking Brian about his thematic ambitions in Saga, and the discussion evolves from there. Over the course of their conversation, they ask their guest about the origins of the award-winning series, his melding of the sci-fi and fantasy genres, the challenges of juggling more than one ongoing title at a time, the stories behind the artists he chooses to work with, the pay-what-you-will philosophy behind The Private Eye, the future of Panel Syndicate, his loyal (and enthusiastic) fan base, the ever-evolving nature of comic conventions, and (as much as Brian can reveal) his new series that were recently announced at the Image Expo. Along the way they discuss not only his current titles, but also Brian’s ever-popular Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Swamp Thing, The Runaways, and The Pride of Baghdad. This is an exciting interview for the guys, and it’s a sign of the many great guests they will have on The Comics Alternative in the coming year.

V for Vertigo, Episode 100: Extravaganza!

I celebrate this 100 episode by dragging a few people on to talk about the Y: The Last Man series—spoilers and all. We also stray off topic because that’s the way I run my show. Thanks again to Karen and Rob for joining me and for you listeners that have stuck with me for 100 episodes. It’s been a long road.

V for Vertigo, Episode 96: Inverted Commas

I recently signed up for Netflix, and spend a few minutes talking about it and all the movies I’ve watched—namely, romantic comedies.

There’s a little bit of news from Emerald Comic-Con. It’s nothing exciting but it is “news.” I go over Y: The Last Man—Whys and Wherefores (Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra). I talk about the little good, the mostly bad, and the very ugly of the entire series.

Episode 94: The Champ Is Here!

I celebrate my recent victory in my local Northern California League for L5R despite tanking the last two tournaments. I’m that good. I then talk about the NBA Dunk Contest and the homecooking Blake Griffin got.

There’s a minor bit of news this week before I go over Y: The Last Man—Motherland (Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra). One more trade before I done covering how bad Y is. What more is there to say about it? Really?

V for Vertigo, Episode 92: That’s What She Said

Football season’s finally over, but there must be one last show about it. I talk about the Superbowl, but I spend more time going over the horrible halftime, the all right commercials, and the awesome movie trailers they showed.

I’m tired of talking about Y: The Last Man, but I’m also amazed about how I can find something new and terrible each trade. This week I go over the talking and sitting or standing that Y does so well in Y: The Last Man—Kimono Dragon (Bryan K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra).

Episode 90: Conveniently Down

I’m a bit grumpy this week, more so than normal. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m old. I spend a few minutes talking about my card tournament and while I scrubbed out, I got to play the new Back to the Future card game. Now that’s good. Go get it.

There’s actually some news this week. Surprise, surprise. I then go on yet another rant about Y: The Last Man—Paper Dolls (Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra). Even I’m getting tired of talking about how bad it is.
