Radio Free Asgard 274

This week we wrap up the first half of Hercules Unbound with issue #6! It’s the final (for now!) face-off between Hercules and Ares! This issue features a dead bird, a dead dog, some seriously speedy horses, and a complete lack of knowledge of English geography! ┬áDare you miss this???

Radio Free Asgard 273

This week we have the conclusion of our Hunter Blood story in Hercules Unbound #5! This story involves a cockney gorilla taking Hercules to see a movie while Big Ben is on the verge of collapsing outside! Plus one of our party gets squished! (sorry, it wasn’t the writer…)

Radio Free Asgard 271

This week we look at Hercules Unbound #3! In this issue, we go through a hole in the ground next to the Eiffel Tower to visit Pluto/Hades in Hell/Hades! We are joined by the usual gang, plus a lyre-player with a groovy headband! Don’t miss the first appearance of Gorr the God Butcher’s dark servants, an “accidental” killing, and several other silly coincidences. It’s Hercul-riffic! (plus, my con report of C2E2!)

Radio Free Asgard 268

This week, we move on to something new (for us, anyway) as we cover the first issue of the old DC Comics series, “Hercules Unbound”!

It’s Hercules vs. a variety of antagonists, including Magenta Hulk, weird octopuses, the lackeys of Ares: God of War! Plus, we learn how to survive a nuclear war!

Deconstructing Comics #468: Harvey Kurtzman’s MAD

MADWhile early 1950s anti-comics hysteria eventually resulted in the cancellation of nearly all their books, EC Comics still had one thing going for them: MAD! Written by Harvey Kurtzman and drawn by some of the best comics artists of the age, this parody comic set the template for much that came after it. But can the humor still be appreciated today? What are we to think of some of the attitudes on display toward, say, women or certain ethnic groups? Tim and Kumar discuss.

Deconstructing Comics #243: “Frontline Combat”

EC Comics are primarily remembered as gruesome horror stories, but the company published in other genres as well. One EC staple was war comics, which enjoyed great popularity during the Korean War. One such title was Frontline Combat, the comic that dared to admit that “Marines retreat!” The now-huge names behind the series — Harvey Kurtzman, John Severin, Jack Davis, Wally Wood, and more — primarily intended it as an anti-war book, but is it? Is it possible to simultaneously portray war as horrible, and painstakingly present the tanks and guns in all their glory? Tim and Kumar discuss.

Tales of the Justice Society of America – Episode #9

0d9c

This whacky episode begins with a discussion of Chewbacca’s comic book dialogue and just gets weirder from there. Hosts Michael Bailey and Scott H. Gardner bring you yet another exciting chapter in the ongoing saga of comicdom’s first super-team!! First up, Michael recounts The Atom’s Indiana Jones-esque adventure from All-Star Comics #3 (the JSA’s very first get-together). Then it’s on to the feature event, an in-depth discussion of All-Star Comics #65 where we find Superman battling for his very life against the fiendish schemes of Vandal Savage!! Character Spotlight this issue zooms in on Alan Scott, the ORIGINAL Green Lantern, and last but not least — BECAUSE YOU DEMAND IT! — still more zany comic book ads!!

In “That Dirty Beach” (hey, that’s seriously the title! I don’t make this shit up, okay?), We find out that Aquaman and Hostess Twinkies are the reason why we continue to have used rubbers and medical syringes washing up on our shores…

Tales of the Justice Society of America – Episode #8

0d9c

This episode, we start out with Scott H. Gardner answering the burning question — “What’s in the ***ing box?!” — which inadvertently sets Michael Bailey off on a tirade about event fatigue in modern comics. Then the discourse gets slightly…ummm, elevated with a…er, firm offering of up-lifting adventure with a cocksure Dr. Fate battling evil with a wave of his “magic wand” from All-Star Comics #3 (the JSA’s very first adventure).

The main feature is an analysis of issue #64 of All-Star Comics in which our heroes travel back to the magical kingdom of Camelot!! Character Spotlight this issue on Sir Justin, the Shining Knight, and last but not least — BECAUSE YOU DEMAND IT! — still more zany comic book ads!!

While elsewhere in Gotham City Firefly burns a Senior Citizens Community to the ground, Batman and Robin battle the macabre menace of — “The Muse”!!

Hourman is in the Character Spotlight this issue and — BECAUSE YOU DEMAND IT! — even more zany comic book ads!!

0d9c

Gardner read some listener feedback, take a peek at a portion of a classic JSA adventure, review All-Star Comics issue #59, deliver some JSA news, character spotlight one of Scott’s all-time favorite comic book heroes, the Earth-2 Robin, examining both the similarities as well as the vast differences between him and his Earth-1 counterpart, and finally wrap the whole thing up with a fascinating discussion of the classic and often zany comic book ads found in these great old issues — such as The Battle of The Century and The Cupcake Caper!!
