Here We Come, Walking Down the Street…

This week Gene and Derek discuss, yet again, three diverse titles. They begin with Anneli Furmark’s Red Winter (Drawn and Quarterly). It’s the the first in a trilogy of graphic novels, although this is Furmark’s first work translated into English. The narrative is set in the late 1970s and centers on two lovers struggling with complicating relationships, both marital and political. Each chapter focuses on a particular character involved in the drama, and Furmark’s presentation is both contemplative and tonally provocative. The guys eagerly await further Furmark translations coming from Drawn and Quarterly.

Next, the Two Guys check out the first issue of a new Vertigo Comics miniseries, Motherlands, written by Si Spurrier and with art by Rachel Stott. This is a sci-fi, futuristic story of a middle-age multi-dimensional bounty hunter, Tabitha Tubach, trying to earn a living, while at the same time struggling with her past and a mother who marked it (and not for the better). And as if familial matters couldn’t get more any more trying, the end of this inaugural issue brings additional complications with the emergence of Tabitha’s sibling, Bubbsa.

Gene and Derek wrap up this week’s show with Alex Segura, Matthew Rosenberg, and Joe Eisma’s The Archies #4. It’s unusual that the guys review an issue of a series beyond the first one or two issues, but this is a special case. The focus of The Archies #4 is a musical group near and dear to both Derek and Gene, The Monkees. That’s right, Davy, Mickey, Peter, and Mike meet The Archies…which is not as unusual as you might think. After all, both groups have been perceived as “fictions,” both have been categorized as bubblegum pop, both inadvertently find themselves in weird dilemmas, and both have a history with Don Kirshner. Hey hey…

Back on the Edge

Paul and Derek are excited to have Karen Berger on The Comics Alternative. The first release from her new Dark Horse Comics imprint, Berger Books, occurs next week, and the guys talk with Karen on the cusp of this event. The Two Guys ask their guest about the genesis of Berger Books as well as her efforts in launching new titles — such as Hungry Ghosts, Incognegro: Rennaisance, Mata Hari, and The Seeds — and securing impressive talent. But they also talk with Karen about her time working at DC Comics and establishing the industry-defining Vertigo brand. This is a fun and informative interview, and Karen Berger is one of the most engaging and pleasant guests the Two Guys have ever had on the podcast.

Deconstructing Comics #558: “Transmetropolitan”

Spider Jerusalem

Transmetropolitan, by Warren Ellis and Darrick Robertson, was a 60-issue series that covered potential issues of the future as well as political issues for any era. Tim and Kumar have read the whole series, and now they’re here with an analysis. How does the series’ take on the future stack up, fifteen years later? How does it seem prescient, and how does it feel a bit off-base? What are the politics of the series? Why does it appropriate a couple of iconic images?

Sexual Healing

This week the Two Guys with PhDs Talking about Comics look at three very different titles. They begin with Elijah Brubaker’s Reich, a twelve-issue biography published by Sparkplug Comics and distributed through Alternative Comics. The series reveals the life of Wilhelm Reich, the Austrian-American psychoanalyst known for his influential work in character analysis, his advocacy of orgastic potency, and, more controversially, his theories surrounding orgonomy. After that they discuss The American Way: Those Above and Those Below #1 (Vertigo Comics). Written by John Ridley with art by George Jeanty, this is a sequel to their eight-issue Wildstorm series that came out in 2008. Then Andy and Derek wrap things up with Time and Vine #1 (IDW Publishing), Thom Zahler’s followup to his 2015 miniseries Long Distance. The guys note that this latest title bears all the markings of Zahler’s previous work, including Love and Capes: engaging art, impressive dialogue, and nuanced character interaction that is both romantic and witty.

ComicsVerse Podcast Episode 78: Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta

V FOR VENDETTA was a personal podcast for me. As the resident anarchist in ComicsVerse’s stable of commentators, I was both one of the people advocating for an episode about it and one of the most well-prepared on the panel to discuss its political inspiration.

LISTEN: Want more Alan Moore podcasts? ComicsVerse delves into the Origin of Alan Moore’s Swamp-Thing!

Justin jokes early on that our open discussion is “the strangest of all podcasts,” but to me, as an academic, this discussion felt familiar. V FOR VENDETTA is a sprawling, intellectually dense work that has to be engaged with from a scholarly perspective to be fully appreciated. It’s packed with allusions, political theory, and musings on human nature. We tried our best to meet it on its own terms. Therefore, what makes for one of our most heady podcasts is also one of our most interesting. Those of you who’ve got near the end of your BA or past it will probably find it similar to a seminar in which the professor has an even more dry sense of humor— Justin’s sense of humor —than professors tend to have.  Connor, as a Princeton graduate, is able to seamlessly move into our seminar-style discussion. Naturally, ComicsVerse editor Jake Grubman’s post-graduate education in law prepared him well for such a discussion, and of course, Gabby Beans’ reputation as a thinker precedes her, so her thoughtful contributions come as no surprise.

READ: Alan Moore’s WATCHMEN is under the scope of the lens of Laura Mulvey’s Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema!

Part of why I hoped that we would do a podcast on V FOR VENDETTA is simply that I love Alan Moore’s work, but I also thought that it was doubly relevant in the present US political climate. It’s relevant to a topic that’s been making the rounds in the news for years: the hacktivist organization Anonymous. And it’s relevant to a much newer topic: the accusation that Donald Trump and his rise are fascistic. Especially with some small degree of confrontation between Anonymous’ and Trumps’ organizations themselves, the questions of whether Trump is a fascist and of whence Anonymous’ inspiration comes are worth asking and discussing. We touch on these topics, and I hope the groundwork that I lay for them myself by attempting to define fascism and anarchism is helpful to listeners. In this way, we hope this podcast allows you to continue these discussions yourselves!

Episode 73: Investigating Mat Johnson’s INCOGNEGRO – Race in America

INCOGNEGRO is one of the most entertaining and important graphic novels I have had the pleasure of reading, and during this podcast, I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by brilliant and beautiful people who shared my enthusiasm for this book.Written by Mat Johnson, INCOGNEGRO is about a black reporter in the early 1930’s using his light skin and Eurocentric features to impersonate a white man as he investigates lynchings in the south. This panel was immaculately hosted by Gabby Beans, she kept the conversation going as Malia Knight, Bintu Conte, Travelle Barksdale, and myself gave our shiny two cents on race relations in America, systematic oppression, and of course this hilarious, entertaining, and important comic.

LISTEN: X-Men comics fans, check out our interview with historic X-Men writer Chris Claremont!

Written by Mat Johnson, INCOGNEGRO is about a black reporter in the early 1930’s using his light skin and Eurocentric features to impersonate a white man as he investigates lynchings in the south. The podcast panel was immaculately hosted by Gabby Beans, she kept the conversation going as Malia Knight, Bintu Conte, Travelle Barksdale, and myself gave our shiny two cents on race relations in America, systematic oppression, and of course this hilarious, entertaining, and important comic. The current social landscape is occupied by dangerous Trump rallies and the Black Lives Matter movement means there couldn’t have been a better time for this comic to be analyzed and discussed. This book would be relevant at most times in American history, but with themes of race and gender being central to the narrative, our current social climate seemed like a perfect coincidence. An even greater coincidence was that we were able to record this podcast in February, which is considered Black History month (in some parts of this country).

HEAR: Join an all-female cast of ComicsVerse Podcasters discussing Marjorie Liu’s MONSTRESS!

Mat Johnson managed to craft a refreshing noir filled with analysis on racial and gender politics while still finding time for colorful characters and an intriguing murder mystery.  INCOGNEGRO truly represents some of the best work in the medium we at ComicsVerse love to analyze deeply. British artist Warren Pleece provided the artwork. In terms of character design, it seemed that Warren Pleece intentionally made the physical differences between black and white characters close to non-existent, and white a black and white color scheme (keeping with the noir theme) the race of the characters is almost impossible to decipher without context. Johnson and Pleece have brought the world and the awesome medium of graphic novels a spectacular, funny, uncomfortable, important book. We hope you enjoy all that we have to say.
