Jimmy has tamed the beast that was San Diego Comic Con and survived to tell the tales! Here, you’ll hear his recap of the show. Just a few fun tidbits of what went down, people he met, celebs he saw, elbows he rubbed, parties, roundtable sessions, interviews, awesome press rooms, hotels, outside of Comic Con, and all of the madness! He mostly did press rooms but managed to get some 1:1 interviews as well. He chatted with the Clare Kramer (“Glory” on Buffy the Vampire Slayer) about her new documentary that she directed called Joyrider. He also talked to pop star Lights about her upcoming album Skin & Earth and the comic book mini-series she created/wrote/drew/colored/lettered/etc. that coincides with it. On the last day of the con, he conversed with Shannon Wheeler about his new book Sh*t My President Says as well as his past work. And finally, Jimmy had his annual therapy session interview with clinical psychologist pal Dr. Andrea Letamendi discussing superheroes, Star Wars, and real life issues.

Starting next week and the following few weeks after, there will be no regular format shows. Only SDCC press room specials. Jimmy needs that long just to recover from all of the craziness that is Comic Con International. You will hear roundtables for Inhumans, Wynonna Earp, Doctor Who, Legends of Tomorrow, Batman and Harley Quinn, Dirk Gently, Supergirl, Dark Matter, Battlestar Galactica reunion, Gotham, iZombie, Justice League Action, Lucifer and Teen Titans Go! He missed some rooms that he wanted to cover but boy howdy did he still cover a lot!

Deconstructing Comics #264: Lars Martinson

Tonoharu -- The zebra is killing me over hereIn the years of doing this podcast, we’ve encountered many comics from Japan, but not many about Japan. One in the latter category is “Tonoharu”, about an American teaching English in Japan (an occupation that some of us on this podcast know a bit about!); the second installment of the four-book series was recently released. This week Tim calls up creator Lars Martinson to pick his brain on such questions as, is it jarring for some readers to see a comic about Japan that doesn’t look like manga? What was the inspiration for the style you did choose? And just how long does it take to draw all those lines?! A great discussion ensues.

Comic Book Outsiders Episode 41

In this episode we start with some news and reviews, talking over some recent comics and the end of one of our favourite shows, BattleStar Galactica. It’s a spoiler free review as I hadn’t seen it at the time.

Our main feature is an interview with Chris Staros the Publisher of Top Shelf Productions, and until recently the President of the Comic Book Legal Defence Fund. We talk about some of the great graphic novels Top Shelf have put out in the past, what he has coming up this year including the third graphic novel in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series – Century, his convention schedule, working for the CBLDF, and working with Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie on Lost Girls.

Finally, one episode late, we finish off with our first Book Club selection – The Winter King. Scott and Steve talk in depth about the story, the characters, the mythology and history of the book and how the author Bernard Cornwell weaves fact and fiction together. We have feedback from members of our forum and at the end of our discussion an audio review from Heath Holland, a friend and co-host of Geek Brunch. We also announce what our next selection will be for the Book Club.

This episode is a big one, but we’ll be back next week as usual with another one.
