Sequential Underground #85 – Go F*ck Yourself

The final podcast by indie comics creators for indie comics creators!

Sequential Underground
Listen to Sequential Underground #84 right now:

Hosts:
Shawn Atkins and Nick Marino

Show Notes:

It’s the last episode of Sequential Underground from the AudioShocker! We kick things off with some regional Culinary Underground conversation, discussing the food on S Craig St in Pittsburgh, PA (where Shawn just started a new job).

Nick is pitching “The Graphic Novel Formerly Known As The Bible 2” to publishers and we recount some of our failed pitches from the past. Among those is Shawn and Nick’s failed animation pitch for Li’l Bastards, which was rejected by Frederator Studios for being too much too soon after the Sandy Hook shootings.

Shawn also shares the finished version of his Gello Apocalypse / Star Wars mashup! Last week, he posted the inks for this piece on the Gello blog.

Speaking of last week, HaterMania body slammed the internet with its muscly goodness! Shawn and Nick recount the long and winding journey of their Super Haters collaboration, discussing the prolonged creation process from start to finish.

So what’s next for Sequential Underground? We dunno! Shawn might continue it on another website or this episode might be THE END. Either way, you can always access all of our past episodes on the Sequential Underground archives page.

Confused about why Sequential Underground is wrapping up? Check out this podcast from last week and then come back to AudioShocker.com this Wednesday, February 26th for a special announcement about the future of our podcasts!

Sequential Underground #83 – Comedy vs. Tragedy

The podcast by indie comics creators for indie comics creators!

Sequential Underground
Listen to Sequential Underground #83 right now:

Hosts:
Shawn Atkins and Nick Marino

Guest:
Brian John Mitchell

Show Notes:
Brian asks: “What comes easier to you… writing comedy or writing tragedy?”

Shawn finds writing comedy much easier. He can improvise the jokes in his comics while he’s drawing the story, but he needs to plan his drama out ahead of time.

Nick is also drawn to comedy. He has to make conscious decisions to include serious moments in his stories whereas writing comedy just flows naturally.

But Brian defaults to tragedy instead of comedy. For him, writing a serious script takes only a fraction of the time that it takes to write a funny one.

So… what about you?

Sequential Underground #80 – Stripped Down

The podcast by indie comics creators for indie comics creators!

Sequential Underground
Listen to Sequential Underground #80 right now:

Hosts:
Shawn Atkins and Nick Marino

Show Notes:
Shawn assisted cartoonist Rick Stromoski, creator of Soup to Nutz, at the Steel City Con and that got him thinking about comic strips. See, Shawn’s comics foundation is in creating comic books. Here’s some of his early Gello Apocalypse work:

But Nick’s foundation is in comic strips. Most of his early comics were three, four, or six panel gags.

In this episode, we share our experiences with comic strips. We discuss the differences in writing, drawing, pacing, and distributing comic strips vs. comic books (or whatever you wanna call comics made up of pages!).

Shawn and Nick have even collaborated on comics strips in the past. Shawn wrote and Nick arted a seven-part series of Super Haters comic strips in 2011:

We’d love to hear your experiences creating comic strips, so make sure to comment with your thoughts on the comic strip creation process and we’ll read your comments on the next episode.

And finally, after the end theme… more Culinary Underground!

And…
At the time of this recording, the Love & Monsters Kickstarter campaign (featuring comics by Shawn and music by Nick) hadn’t been funded. But in the past 24 hours, thanks to the generosity and support of our listeners and friends, the project has reach it’s funding goal. THANKS!

Hmmmmmmmm something tells me this isn’t gonna go well…

Destruct-O-Tron goads Mind’s Eye into using magic on their crying baby, resulting in an irreversible 24-year spell that turns Annabelle into a lamb.

Didn’t you hear what I just said, D-Tron?!?!? It’s irreversible!

Angela and Nick discuss the creative process behind the story and answer some fantastic questions from cartoonist Jared Catherine.

We watch Annabelle as she grows from a lamb into a sheep.

From plotting to scripting to penciling to inking to coloring, the entire artistic journey is covered in this ‘cast.

And we witness the magical day when she’s about to return to human form.

PLUS: Nick’s GIF overload and Angela’s illustrative passion for ovis aries.

Sequential Underground #67

The podcast by indie comics creators for indie comics creators!

After Shawn Atkins recaps his experience at last weekend’s Pittsburgh Comic Arts Festival, he talks to Nick Marino about keeping long ongoing comics fresh and exciting for himself as creator.

Gello ApocalypseShawn keeps it fresh by staying flexible and experimenting.

For years, Shawn has told the story of Kat and Pryor in Gello Apocalypse. He’s kept things fresh by letting the art and storytelling of the comic grow along with him, going from short black and white stories to long multi-part tales in color. Plus, he likes to have fun and experiment, trying out new sequential tricks.

Super HatersNick couldn’t keep it fresh! He got burned out by the format.

Nick Marino, on the other hand, couldn’t maintain his mojo on Super Haters. While the webcomic lives on as sporadic short stories, the long-term narrative became a drag. Nick got tired of the daily grind and the comics’s constrictive format.

Explorers of the UnknownShawn kept the punch in his comics by finding a collaborator.

But burnout doesn’t have to happen to you! When Shawn needed a kick in the pants on Explorers of the Unknown, he invited his friend Seth Fronzoli to join him as a co-plotter and scripter. He maintains his excitement by asking his collaborator to surprise him with the scripts.

A double dose of Jared Catherine continues from Gello Shots #11!

Jared joins Nick Marino to share the behind-the-scene goods about their Super Haters webcomics collaboration, Mr. Magnifico Unchained!

Open the image in a new tab to read Jared’s naughty refrigerator poetry.

Jared chats about the difference between his more detailed writing style (as seen in Incrediman Comix) versus Nick’s super-succinct style used in the script for this story. That conversation evolves into a discussion about Jared’s artistic process and how his colored pages ended up being black and white in the final version.

Jared and Nick also dish about some of the hidden jokes in their tale that you can only see by reading a hi-res version (like the one here on deviantART). And Nick shares about his favorite step in the process of creating a Super Haters story — tweaking the character dialogue to be tighter and funnier once the art is complete.

Don’t forget to listen to Jared on Nick’s favorite podcast, Comic Book Pitt.

Also, Jared’s posted all of his process art for this story, from character sketches all the way to the colors (that eventually became gray tones!).
