Host Anthony Desiato journeys to Krypton, Smallville, and Metropolis with guest Dan Greenfield (13th Dimension) as they discuss the five major post-Crisis tellings of Superman’s origin story: MAN OF STEEL (1986) by John Byrne, FOR ALL SEASONS by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, BIRTHRIGHT by Mark Waid and Leinil Yu, SECRET ORIGIN by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, and AMERICAN ALIEN by Max Landis. Part 1 of a two-part book club event. Anthony and Dan will be back in two weeks for Part 2, which will tackle MAN OF STEEL (2018) by Brian Michael Bendis.
In this latest ball-smashing episode, Magnus begins winding down the Superman Begins miniseries with discussion about Superman- Secret Origin by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank. Brief discussion, as it happens, for reasons that will become clear only after you listen to the episode.
Seriously, this episode is not for the faint of heart. It’s also not for fans of Secret Origin. If you love Secret Origin, you may want to listen to something else.

The podcast returns! This episode I talk about the “secret” origin of the podcast, what I’ve been up to (aka why haven’t I been podcasting?), and what’s to come. Plus, I talk about some other podcasts that I enjoy.

Recent episodes of this podcast have focused on older aspects of Superman history. So this week I thought it would be a good time to take a look at two recent mini-series, with the recent publication of the third and final issue of SUPERMAN: THE LAST FAMILY OF KRYPTON. This episode first looks at the six issue mini-series SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN. The first issue was published during the last week of September, 2009. With various delays with the final three issues, the series did not conclude until the final issue was released during the last week of August of this year. THE LAST FAMILY OF KRYPTON had a more regular publication schedule, being released from August to the first week of October this year. It was the first ELSEWORLDS story published in about a decade.
While avoiding spoilers, I review both series and discuss how SECRET ORIGIN changes details of the Superman origin as depicted in THE MAN OF STEEL mini-series of 1986, and whether I think it’s a good thing or not.
Next episode: SUPERBOY’S NEW FUN ADVENTURES!

The Book of the Month for May 2010 is none other than Green Lantern: Secret Origin (DC) written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Ivan Reis.
The perfect selection for both new and old fans of Green Lantern.
Join Scott Gardner and Michael Bailey (of “View From The Longbox” and “From Crisis To Crisis: A Superman Podcast” fame) for a lively, engaging, and oftimes hilarious discussion as they examine the exciting three-issue definitive origin tales of the pre-Crisis Batman Family in “The Untold Legend of the Batman” by Len Wein, John Byrne, and Jim Aparo!!

This week, Scott and Mike kick things off with more of YOUR e-mails and the usual discussion/tangents/rants that they inspire. Listen to hear The Amazing Scott predict something eerily close to the I-Pad well before it was even announced!!
Then, it’s on to DC Special #29 which features the Most Sensational Secret of World War II — The Untold Origin of the Justice Society and how they came to be!! See (or at the very least hear anyway) how it all began as the guys cover this spectacular issue from top to bottom — including Mike proving that he does indeed have a very large chip on his shoulder when it comes to proving how what a big comic book brain he supposedly has!!
Special appearance by Uncle Adolf!!
After that are the ads and, sadly, they’re not quite up to par. I mean, For Pete’s Sake, there wasn’t even a Hostess ad in this one (which Mike and Scott are fairly certain violated some law from this time period)!!
All of this — PLUS — What else was lookin’ good in the DC Multiverse at this time!!
:Sigh: I still can’t get over there not being any Hostess ad in this issue. That’s just downright Un-American!
