Wayne’s Comics Podcast #275: Ben Penrod From Awesome Con

Wayne Hall, Wayne’s Comics, Awesome Con, anime, Doctor Who, David Tennant, Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Stan Lee, Justin Jordan, Phil Lamarr, Samurai Jack, Donna Noble,

It’s a special episode of my Wayne’s Comics Podcast, so I thought for #275 we’d go where this show has never gone before – to talk with the leader of a successful comics convention! I talk with Ben Penrod from Awesome Con about that high-octane event, including how it came to be, what goes on there, and what we might expect from them in the future. He even discusses how it got that name, and why he thinks it’s perfect for the years ahead! Comics conventions are a big part of the comics experience these days, so I’m sure you’ll enjoy what he has to say! For more about Awesome Con, including details about this year’s event, go to their website here, and for more about the other conventions Ben is part of, head to this link.

It’s the Wednesday before Halloween, so it’s time once again for the Two Guys with PhDs to look at this season’s spooky, horror-filled offerings. This year, Andy and Derek discuss 10 individual titles, some of which were specifically published for Halloween 2016 and others with particular themes and release dates that nicely coincide with the holiday. They begin with four all-age anthology titles and then move on to works that, while not specifically intended as Halloween specials, capture the spirit of the season  in one form or another. In total, they discuss:

ComicsVerse Podcast Episode 67: Analyzing Scott Snyder’s BATMAN

Scott Snyder may be a household name these days for Batman fans, but this was not always the case.  It was only 5 years ago, in 2011, that he began his run on DETECTIVE COMICS, which earned him quite the reputation.   His writing for DC has continued into the New 52, and you can still read his writing on BATMAN AND ROBIN ETERNAL.

In this episode of the ComicsVerse podcast, we focus on Scott Snyder’s beginnings with Batman.  From BLACK MIRROR, his first collected Batman trade paperback, to COURT OF OWLS and CITY OF OWLS, the first two volumes of the New 52 BATMAN, we analyze and explore common themes throughout Scott Snyder’s writings.

LISTEN: Want more podcasts centered around DC Comics characters? We delve into Martian Manhunter here!

BLACK MIRROR, interestingly, occurs while Dick Grayson is taking Bruce’s place as Batman, and Scott Snyder came in swinging.  With writing that fits the darkness of Batman’s Gotham City and an all-new villain, BLACK MIRROR is a strong freshman effort for Snyder.  He adds depth to every character he utilizes, developing history and rewriting the past.

This is one of the recurring techniques Snyder uses in his BATMAN storylines– the use of history.  BLACK MIRROR, GATES OF GOTHAM, and his work in the New 52 all explore the hidden secret history of the founding and original construction of the city, interweaving this with the histories of the characters themselves.  The past is brought into the present, and we see how history influences current events in mysterious ways.

HEAR: The origin of Alan Moore’s Swamp-Thing changed this DC Comics character forever! Listen to the podcast!

THE COURT OF OWLS and THE CITY OF OWLS almost beg to be read together.  Exploring the idea that a secret society has been ruling Gotham from the shadows for centuries, we see Batman brought to the brink of insanity.  He is captured and placed in the Court’s labyrinth with their assassin, the Talon.  Their ultimate plan is to come out of the shadows in a glorious display of power and take over Gotham at last.  It’s one hell of a rollercoaster ride, and was a great way to kick-off the New 52!
