Andy and Derek have the pleasure of talking with Miriam Libicki whose latest book, Toward a Hot Jew, was released late last year from Fantagraphics. This is a collection of various graphic essays that Miriam has written over the years, a style of writing she describes as a comics form of gonzo journalism. The guys talk with her about these various pieces and their mix of reportage, autobiography, and expository analysis. They also discuss Miriam’s autobiographical series Jobnik!, which concerns her experiences serving in the Israeli army. Most of the talk revolves around Miriam’s writing, but at times the conversation becomes more academic and speculative, in many ways reflecting the tone found throughout Toward a Hot Jew.

Comic Timing – Episode 184: Changing Political Climates and Comics

lexluthor

As the title implies, Comic Timing goes political this episode, partially as some catharsis after the events of the past few weeks, and also as a way to try and explain and further understand the political climate, and how it effects the comic book industry. Brandon Christopher of Pop Culture Clash, Donovan Moragn Grant of Questions, We Don’t Have Answers, Brent Kossina and Ian Levenstein discuss the decision made by Humberto Ramos and George Perez to refuse attending conventions in Red States after the President Elect takes office, as well as comic shops refusing to stock Motor Crush issue 1 because it has a black female lead. We also discuss tangential political topics that are not entirely comic related, but are still relevant to the overall conversation.

This episode may not be for everyone, but I really do feel like there is some excellent conversation within. No punches were pulled, but everyone involved did their best to be respectful while speaking their minds. Give it a listen and see for yourself!

ComicsVerse Podcast Episode 78: Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta

V FOR VENDETTA was a personal podcast for me. As the resident anarchist in ComicsVerse’s stable of commentators, I was both one of the people advocating for an episode about it and one of the most well-prepared on the panel to discuss its political inspiration.

LISTEN: Want more Alan Moore podcasts? ComicsVerse delves into the Origin of Alan Moore’s Swamp-Thing!

Justin jokes early on that our open discussion is “the strangest of all podcasts,” but to me, as an academic, this discussion felt familiar. V FOR VENDETTA is a sprawling, intellectually dense work that has to be engaged with from a scholarly perspective to be fully appreciated. It’s packed with allusions, political theory, and musings on human nature. We tried our best to meet it on its own terms. Therefore, what makes for one of our most heady podcasts is also one of our most interesting. Those of you who’ve got near the end of your BA or past it will probably find it similar to a seminar in which the professor has an even more dry sense of humor— Justin’s sense of humor —than professors tend to have.  Connor, as a Princeton graduate, is able to seamlessly move into our seminar-style discussion. Naturally, ComicsVerse editor Jake Grubman’s post-graduate education in law prepared him well for such a discussion, and of course, Gabby Beans’ reputation as a thinker precedes her, so her thoughtful contributions come as no surprise.

READ: Alan Moore’s WATCHMEN is under the scope of the lens of Laura Mulvey’s Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema!

Part of why I hoped that we would do a podcast on V FOR VENDETTA is simply that I love Alan Moore’s work, but I also thought that it was doubly relevant in the present US political climate. It’s relevant to a topic that’s been making the rounds in the news for years: the hacktivist organization Anonymous. And it’s relevant to a much newer topic: the accusation that Donald Trump and his rise are fascistic. Especially with some small degree of confrontation between Anonymous’ and Trumps’ organizations themselves, the questions of whether Trump is a fascist and of whence Anonymous’ inspiration comes are worth asking and discussing. We touch on these topics, and I hope the groundwork that I lay for them myself by attempting to define fascism and anarchism is helpful to listeners. In this way, we hope this podcast allows you to continue these discussions yourselves!

Deconstructing Comics #493: The Dangers of Satire (But don’t back down!)

Charlie HebdoThe panel discussion “You can get killed doing this: sketches from the satire biz” was held at the recent MoCCA Fest in New York. The panel discussed the chilling effects on what satirical works get published, and why it’s important to keep publishing satire anyway. The blurb in the festival’s booklet reads in part: “Can satire survive in a world of trigger warnings and Kalishnikov triggers? Could the National Lampoon be published in a post-Charlie Hebdo world? Is self-censorship the greatest sin of all?” This week we present an excerpt of that discussion.

It was led by Rick Meyerowitz, formerly of National Lampoon, and featured political cartoonist Steve Brodner, former National Lampoon co-editor Sean Kelly, and cartoonist Peter Kuper.

Also: Tim meets up with Mike Seid, Rahsaan Romain, and John Lee at the New York Aspiring Comic Creators Club meetup!

Deconstructing Comics #402: Ted Rall pushes the boundaries

Ted RallThere are numerous ways in which you may have encountered Ted Rall‘s work. In addition to his political cartoons, he’s taken on a variety of other formats and other media: comics journalism (in central Asia, including Afghanistan), newspaper columns, radio, graphic novels, and MAD Magazine work.

While his political views are left-of-center, his tendency to question Democrats as well as Republicans has brought pushback from some on the left. Whether his target is a Republican, a Democrat, or another political cartoonist, Rall pulls no punches.

In this episode, he talks with Tim about his philosophy of political cartooning, filing comics from a war zone, why his editors at MAD just don’t “get” his character Fantabulaman, and much more.

Super Hero Speak – #39: Tony DiGerolamo

This week John and Dave sit down with special guest Tony DiGerolamo. Tony is the writer of such comics as Bart Simpsons comics, The Simpsons, Super Frat, Tony DiGerolamo’s The Travelers and many others. You can catch Tony’s most current work on http://www.thewebcomicfactory.com/. The guys discuss Tony’s career, kids at conventions and toward the end they get a little political. It’s a bit of a left turn for us, but we still had fun with this one. We hope you enjoy.

Deconstructing Comics #330: “Doonesbury”: Polarizing and Unifying

Doonesbury castWhen Doonesbury started nearly 42 years ago, Garry Trudeau was a hot young property, the undergrad student cartoonist who spoke the language of “today’s youth”. Now age 64, Trudeau can hardly make that claim, but instead he can take credit for a monumental strip chronicling the lives of his many cast members and their lives growing old in the social and political environments of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Tim and Kumar assess the strip’s legacy, discuss Brian Walker’s Doonesbury and the Art of G. B. Trudeau, and review the past year’s worth of strips.
