Tales of the Justice Society of America #36

ONCE AGAIN, THE MOST AWESOME THING TO HAPPEN TO THE INTERNET (SINCE FREE PORN ANYWAY) IS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR LISTENING PLEASURE!!

TALES OF THE JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA is back and Scott and Mike are both tanked up on Jolt cola and Hostess fruit pies, so this is going to be a good one!

First up, the guys talk about ALL-STAR SQUADRON #7, which is set during the Christmas of 1941 leading Scott and Mike to talk about the whole Christmas in July experience from when they were younger and lived in the north.  They have predominantly positive things to say about the issue as a whole, mostly because it contains one of THE BEST Nazi themed super-villains ever — BARON BLITZKRIEG!  We even catch up on how the JSA is handling military life and are treated to a TRULY AWESOME sequence of Robotman beaching a Nazi submarine!!  Does it get any cooler?!

Well, there’s also the usual historical notes and commentary.  There aren’t much in the way of ads this week and, sadly, the guys discuss their (gasp, choke, sob) FINAL HOSTESS AD for this series!!

But it is a doozy , folks, and features the Dread Avenger hisself — The Batman — fighting a guy in a dog costume.

Not the Dark Knight’s finest moment, I’ll grant you, but it is made of 100% COMEDY GOLD!

After a quick break, the guys return with the Huntress back-up from WONDER WOMAN #277.  It’s a pretty basic story with the Huntress considering her options on what to do about the fact that D.A. Sims knows her secret identity — and one of these options is… MURDER!!  Also, we get the “big reveal” on just what is up with that secretary from Helena’s law firm — and this is where Mike really starts disliking the story, leading to one of the few big disagreements between Scott and Mike that was finally settled in The Thunderdome!

Two men entered and… well… two men left because Scott and Mike are really out of shape and got tired and decided to go have Mexican at El Ranchero in Peachtree City, GA (which is surprisingly close to Bartertown).
Anyhoo, you get all of that!!  AND some e-mails before the guys ran out of time — but they promise to read even more e-mails next time!!  How about that, huh?!

NEXT WEEK:  ALL-STAR SQUADRON #8

ALSO!!  Be sure to tune in to “Back to the Bins!” Next Wednesday as the guys discuss STEEL: THE INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN just in time for his introduction into the ALL-STAR SQUADRON!  That’s STEEL on Wedneday’s “BACK TO THE BINS!” and All-Star Squadron #8 on Friday’s “TALES OF THE JSA!”

YOU GOT THAT?!!  GOOD!  CUZ IT WILL BE THE MOST EPIC THING SINCE EVER!

THE TREK THROUGH THE SIDELINE JSA EARTH-2 STORIES CONTINUES THIS WEEK ON “TALES OF THE JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA”!

Yes, indeed, cats and kittens!! Scott and Mike are back this week — slightly late because Mike has HORRENDOUS time management skills! Never fear, though. Scott hired some big guy who’s middle name is “The” to… explain… yeah, explain, that’s the best way to put it… “explain” to Mike that the listeners NEED their TALES OF THE JSA!!

Hopefully Mike will recover in time to record the next episode…

In any case — this time out, the guys turn their attention once again to The Huntress and look at The Dark Knight’s Daughter’s butt… er, I mean, appearances! Her appearances! …in BATMAN FAMILY!!

Starting with BATMAN FAMILY #17, The Huntress meets the Earth-1 Batman and Robin for the First Time (where she promptly knocks the Teen Wonder on his ass)!! Seems the Huntress wants some advice from the Caped Crusader on how to deal with this whole double-life thing. And so, the kindly Batman promptly passes her off to somebody else! Specifically, the Earth-1 Batwoman! Then proceeds to take on a bad guy with SERIOUS body image issues.

In the next story, we flash back to a sixties-style adventure in which bad girls Madame Zodiac, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy team-up and only the heroic trio of the Huntress, Batwoman, and Batgirl can handle them!! Your intrepid hosts have problems galore with this particular story, mostly because it’s goofy as hell, but also because Helena Wayne discovers the truism that — if an Earth-2 character goes to Earth-1, they will surely be as mistreated as a red-headed step-child!! For example… remember how Batman dumped Huntress off on Batwoman? Well, Batwoman immediately turns around and pawns Huntress off on Batgirl!! And Batgirl, also the daughter of a Gotham City Police Commissioner, is SO freakin’ condescending to the Huntress!! Seriously! What the HELL is THAT all about?!!

So then, the guys turn their attention lastly to BATMAN FAMILY issues 18 through 20, in which Helena graduates to her own feature for the last three issues of the series. And boy, is it a really good story!! Seriously! Sure it kinda feels like a television super-hero pilot from the late ’70s, but that actually makes it all the more awesome. In this one, The Huntress takes on an arsonist setting fires in a Gotham neighborhood, all while having to put up with a co-worker that deserves the ass-kicking to end all ass-kickings. Scott and Mike really dig into this one and even end up talking about vigilantism and speculating about just how many people the Golden-Age Batman and Superman may’ve let die during their early days. The guys also debate The Huntress’ fate post “CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS”. Those “fascinating” conversations are followed by some ads and…

We are VERY pleased to announce… THE RETURN OF THE HOSTESS AD!!

Yes, indeed!! The ads hawking high calorie, low nutrition snacks are back, baby!! And this time, it is Aquaman and Aqualad in an adventure that once again, stunningly, makes a good deal of sense — much to Scott and Mike’s chagrin.

Believe it or not, the five stories (and two panels) covered this episode equal only about two regular issues, so this episode comes in at a normal running time for a change (well, at least as normal as these blabbermouths can manage anyway)!!

Next Week — The guys cover some adventures of Alan Scott, The Earth-2 Green Lantern, in both GREEN LANTERN and THE FLASH! See you then!!

Hey there, Cats and Kittens! We are back with racks and racks of the best on wax, so hows about another groovy sound-spin on WJSA because it’s BOSS?

No? Awright, awright, so maybe we DON’T have racks and racks of the best on wax, but we DO have The Origin of Power Girl in Showcase Comics 97 through 99 this week and BOY.. is it “meh”!! Compared to the Huntress Origin, which the guys LOVED so much, it’s pretty disappointing. Mike and Scott were expecting PG’s origin to be just as good. Sadly, not the case (queue the sad trombone). Now, the issues aren’t terrible or anything, but there is a LOT of goofy going on in them (some of which makes Mike just scratch his head and wonder “What the hell am I lookin’ at here?!”).

Afterwards, the guys come back with a bit o’ e-mail from THE BEST LISTENING AUDIENCE IN THE KNOWN MULTI-VERSE! Subjects include: “Guy Gardner — The Awesomesauce or Captain of the Douche-Bag Brigade”?; Scott’s curiosity over where the JSAers were during the Space Race; Why one listener REALLY likes the show (the check is in the mail, Justin); How Power Girl is a very “healthy” girl and some women just need to eat a frickin’ cheeseburger now and again; And the irony of the JSA’s faithful service to their country all during World War II, yet they were called on the carpet by the guv’ment in the Fifties!

Oh, and Mike goes off on a rant. A political one, which made Scott happy because he was tired of being the only one to do such a thing!

Next Week: The Huntress In BATMAN FAMILY! BE THERE!! Ahoha.

Tales of the Justice Society of America #23

0d9c

Welcome to Episode #23 of “TALES OF THE JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA“, which sadly sees the closing of the first era of this podcast as we cover the last two JSA stories from ADVENTURE COMICS. At least 27 minutes of audio had to be cut because Michael couldn’t stop crying like a big baby. Before that happened, though, Scott and Mike read some more of YOUR e-mails and the usual subjects of the JSA appearance on SMALLVILLE and BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD came up in addition to other musings from the BEST PODCAST-LISTENING AUDIENCE IN THE KNOWN MULTI-VERSE!!

Then, the guys get right into ADVENTURE COMICS #s 465 and 466! In #465, Mike and Scott scratch their heads a lot at the general goofy nature of the story and ask seemingly unimportant questions like — WHY IN THE HELL IS A HOSPITAL DEVELOPING A POISON PILL THAT’LL DISSOLVE IN FIVE HOURS AN KILL THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE?!! In issue #466, they discuss the REAL reason the JSA disbanded in 1953! The guys love this story despite a few nit-picks (but what else is new, right?).

Also in this episode — THE ADS RETURN! Whoo-hoo!! THERE’S EVEN A HOSTESS AD — THAT DOESN”T INVOLVE BASEBALL! Plus, Mike and Scot catch up on the “Elsewhere in the DC Universe” segment (including some issues they missed last month, the fools!).

So, :sniff, sob: The JSA’s ongoing adventures may be over (for now), but there is still A LOT of awesome to come!! “Required Reading” for next week — JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (Vol. 1) #s 135-137, 147 & 148, and 159 & 160. That’s right, folks! You asked for it and they’re bringing it! Scott and Mike WILL be tackling the JLA/JSA crossovers that took place AFTER the release of ALL-STAR COMICS #58.

Tales of the Justice Society of America #22

0d9c

Scott and Mike are back once again to discuss the greatest super-hero team to ever grace the printed page, The JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA! This week we have another episode jam-packed with comic book-y goodness!

First off, the e-mails from the most amazing and AWESOME listening audience in this or any other universe! The talk is fast and furious and includes more discussion on such varied topics as BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD, what sort of metal music Hawkman would listen to (Scott thinks Carter would be a Winger fan), how a meeting of the JSA might go if the Flash got called out for his… er, self-indulgences… and much, much more!!

Then it’s on to Adventure Comics #461 and 462 (which feels a lot like the ALL-STAR COMICS #76 it was probably intended to be). In 461, the JSA seek vengeance for the Death of Batman, but man is this a wonky story!! It feels like there must’ve been some scenes cut out of it, so hopefully there’ll be a special edition DVD at some point. Oh well, at least we get an explanation as to how Dick and Helena get their secret identities back.

After that, in 462, Wildcat goes out for a night on the town with a teenage boy…. uh, waitaminute… that sounds bad. All right, let’s try that again. Wildcat declines an invitation to hang out with Robin, Power Girl and Huntress and ends up meeting a teenage boy on the street. Ummmm… That’s not much better. Okay, here it is… Wildcat goes out to clear his head and ends up having a conversation with a teenage boy that is totally on the up and up and NOTHING INAPPROPRIATE HAPPENS! WE PROMISE! The fact that Wildcat quits the Society after this is a TOTAL COINCIDENCE! Yeah, that works…

No ads again this week, dammit, but they will return next week as does the Hostess ad! Whoo-hoo! And, as always, Mike and Scott take a stroll through the other books that came out from DC at the same time.

So go on… listen already!

Enjoy!!

Tales of the Justice Society of America #21

0d9c

This week…the Death of a Legend!

No, we’re not talking about Scott finally losing at the Loudest Belch In America contest, which he has won for the last five years in row, or Mike stepping down as the official “I Can’t Believe I Ate The Whole Thing!” mascot for Papa Johns. This time out — one of the original heroes of Earth-2 dies!

Before that, though, Scott gives you the 411 on the marriage of the Earth-2 Superman to Lois Lane in the pages of ACTION COMICS #484, which leads to some lively conversation between the hosts. Then it is time for the e-mails. Thrill to the readings of feedback in which two participants climb up on the soapbox leaving Scott and Mike to delightedly cheer them on!! Truly, Tales of the JSA has THE BEST LISTENERS EVER!

It’s been proven by science, I tells ya!

Afterwards, the guys move into issue 461 and 462 of Adventure Comics and boy, did they like this story! Oh, sure they have their fair share of pithy comments and Mike offends every listener with an overbite!!

(Seriously, just because the guy had a really bad overbite when he was a kid, now that his teeth aren’t all jacked up he feels like he can make fun of others??!

Mike can be such a jerk sometimes.)

The guys also tackle the tough issues… like how Jay Garrick is an insensitive ass or Wildcat’s politically incorrect opinion on “a woman’s place” or how everyone wears their costume even when they’re eating or why Chief O’Hara is an out and out coward or how Bill Jensen is a big fat whiner or, sadly, how a legend can die.

It’s really very sad. Yes, it is. Bring your hankey.

Lastly, the guys go over the Daily Planet page from Adventure Comics #462 before catching you up on “Elsewhere in the DCU”. Man, there some fantastic covers discussed! Epically awesome covers! Plus, Mike gets to bitch about something that has ALWAYS bothered him about the movie THE LOST BOYS and discover why Scott still wants a comic book adaptation of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE and ponders the dream team that should produce it.

No Hostess ad this week. Yeah, the guys are pretty bummed about it too…

Enjoy!

Tales of the Justice Society of America #20

Welcome back to the best thing to happen to comics since… well, since ever! TALES OF THE JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA is back and this week Scott and Mike are all business, turning in a lean and mean episode as the show reaches its first bittersweet milestone — the final issue of All-Star Comics!!

Yes, you read that right, folks. Sadly, ALL-STAR COMICS reaches the end of its run with issue #74 and while the cover proclaims this issue “an EPIC JSA story”, the contents seem to indicate otherwise. Not that it’s a bad story, mind you! Mike and Scott have just a few problems with it. Ok… maybe more than just a few problems with it… :sigh: okay, okay… a whole lotta problems with it!! Like, for example, how Dr. Fate is a big ol’ hypocrite. Or Hawkman’s massive ego. Not to mention the fact that… you guys are so not gonna believe this… the JSAers sit on their hands and do nothing! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! This issue was a super-sized mixed bag of messed up, but Mike and Scott cover it all including — the ads (which have a ton of info about the very short lived DC Explosion)!!

No e-mails or Hostess ads this week, but this episode is still sixteen different flavors of awesome!! Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back!! Offer not valid in Tennessee. Void where prohibited. Tales of the Justice Society of America is not responsible for improper use of this podcast. Side effects may include: runny nose, tears streaming down face, aching side muscles, the condition known as doubled-over back syndrome, and assorted other maladies associated with laughing too frickin’ hard. Seek immediate medical attention for smiles lasting more than four hours.

So go ahead… give it a listen already!

Tales of the Justice Society of America #19

CALLING ALL JSA FANS! CALLING ALL JSA FANS! The time has come once again for us all to come together and celebrate as Michael Bailey and Scott H. Gardner proudly present the nineteenth episode of the best thing to EVER happen to the Internet — TALES OF THE JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA! Whoo-hoo!!

It is a packed ninety minutes this week, but every bit is guaranteed to leave you spellbound with intrigue or your money back! Scott and Mike begin the show by revealing not only the winner of their first contest (you know, the one they talked about once and then never mentioned again?), but also the super-secret identity of just where the heck the show’s main theme comes from!

Then Scott goes through a couple of recent finds and once again they are reminded just how messed up Dr. Fate’s origin and marriage are. Next up are the ever-awesome e-mails where YOU the listener get to have your say and the guys once again go off on a number of tangents, but manage to contain themselves somewhat better than they usually do!

It’s down to business as they get into the penultimate issue of All-Star Comics with issue #73. This epic tale concludes the Thorn storyline and sees the Huntress (no, the other one!) locked in mortal combat with the Huntress (no, the OTHER one!) while the rest of the JSA battles with both Thorn and the Sportsmaster all while Wildcat fights for his life! Mike doesn’t have too many problems with this issue, but Scott (as usual) has quite the list of quibbles — all of which are pure comedy gold!

Finally, we have the ads and there are some good ones this week, including a Hostess ad featuring the Man of Steel hisself…

PLUS — A BONUS AD!! One that inadvertently set many a young boy on the path to a life of crime…
