It was some last minute negotiating/planning, but Jimmy and Producer Joe were able to pull off an 11th hour anniversary episode! We gathered at the wee early hour of 12pm on Sunday at Adella wine bar (410 w. 43rd St) here in NYC. Thanks to Adella for hosting! Swing on by if you’re ever in NYC. Big thanks to special guests Michael Emerson, Carrie Preston, Fred Van Lente, Kate Rigg and Lyris Hung. And big ups to last minute drive-by guests that Jimmy called up: Miss Lasko-Gross, Vera Greentea and Rafael Kayanan. Of course, since it’s an anniversary episode, there was plenty of singing. Couldn’t have done it without the awesome CNI Chorus consisting of Rachel Felstein, Kristen French, James Rodriguez, Tony Wolf, Emmy Potter, and Amy Wolk. Thanks to all whom attended as well! We brought  back the “10 words or less” reviews and even covered some news in between. News included: a new Iron Man is coming and she’s a young black female named Riri Williams, John Cho says we’ll learn his character Sulu is gay in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, Genndy Tartakovsky’s Luke Cage mini-series is finally coming to Marvel, Mondo is releasing an Over the Garden Wall vinyl album, and DC is bringing you a He-Man and the Masters of the Universe/Thundercats mini-series in October.

Michael Emerson talks about the Person of Interest finale and interesting fan encounters, Carrie Preston talks about her time on The Good Wife and True Blood and has great advice for young actors, Kate Rigg and Lyris Hung do an awesome nerdy spoken word improv, Fred Van Lente talks about some of his current/upcoming work like Weird Detective and Generation Zero, Miss Lask0-Gross discusses The Sweetness, Vera Greentea talks about her recent 9th successful Kickstarter for a new comic she’s writing (more Nenetl of the Forgotten Spirits) and Rafael Kayanan talks about his upcoming TV work.

Give it a listen and enjoy! On to 800! PLEASE DON’T STEAL THE AUDIO AND POST IT ELSEWHERE! JUST LINK TO THE COMIC NEWS INSIDER WEBSITE PLEASE!

Comics Alternative Interviews: Miss Lasko-Gross and Kevin Colden

Listen to the podcast!

Sweet

LaskoGross-Colden-banner

While Andy and Derek were at HeroesCon last weekend, they talked briefly with a variety of creators in Artists Alley — see last Tuesday’s show for those conversations — but they also had the chance to sit down for longer, more substantive interviews. And they made it a point to do so with Miss Lasko-Gross and Kevin Colden, the creators behind the new series from Z2 Comics, The Sweetness. The first issue has just been released, so the guys had the opportunity, thanks to Miss and Kevin, to read it and ask LaskoGross-Colden at HeroesContheir guests about this unique title. Miss and Kevin describe The Sweetness as a mix between Star Wars and Breaking Bad, where a group of ex-cons and low-level criminals work for a UPS-like delivery service in space…but with a focus on badass women smugglers. Derek and Andy ask specifically about the two unlikely paired female protagonists, Nelly and Scout, but they also discuss their inept male companion Bachmaan, a curious character who Miss admits to not being able to kill off, especially given the way that Kevin has drawn him. The two guests also discuss their working relationship, the benefits and challenges of being married and working on the same title. In fact, Miss and Kevin work so productively together that many times during the interview, the Two Guys just sit back and let their guests carry the back-and-forth. The result is an engaging conversation about this promising new series, one that the guys hope will be shuttling illegal cargo for a long time.

Comics Alternative, On Location: Talking with Creators at SPX 2015, Pt. 1

Listen to the podcast!

Small Talk

SPXBanner

Last weekend, Andy W. and Derek attended Small Press Expo in North Bethesda, MD. While there, they were able to interview a variety of creators about their recent releases, their larger body of work, and any future projects they may be working on. The result was an impressive collection of interviews — 28 in all — each of which lasted from anywhere between 5 minutes to over 20 minutes. The guys have now edited these conversations and are presenting them in a series of three on-location interview episodes conducted at SPX. In this first installment, Derek and Andy talk with:

The exhibition hall of SPX 2015 was packed, and, as a result, the din of the crowd was at times difficult to talk over. But the Two Guys persevered, despite the sound challenges. Sometimes they talked with the creators at their tables, and at other times — such as the interviews with Cole Closser and Meages Fitzgerald — they were able to find a space outside of the hall that demonstrated less auditory chaos.

Two other episodes of on-location interviews will be released on Friday and Saturday. Derek’s much longer conversation with Bill Griffith was released separately. But for now, enjoy the smooth, creamy, indie goodness of today’s installment.

Comics Alternative Interviews: Miss Lasko-Gross

Allegories and Bathroom Catastrophes

ML-GOn this episode of their interview show, Derek and Andy are happy to have as they guest Miss Lasko-Gross, whose new book, Henni (Z2 Comics), has been getting a lot of press. They begin by asking her about all of the attention her graphic novel is receiving, especially in light of the recent Charlie Hebdo tragedy. She tells the guys that while the message of her book is rather timely, she wrote it as a broader, more allegorical narrative, one that addresses intolerance and oppression in a variety of forms. As Miss points out, our culture and those of others are unfortunately never in short supply of narrow-mindedness, a condition for which Henni can be an going reminder. The guys also ask her about her creative process, the narrative catalyst of drawing, and the role of scripting in her Hennilonger-form comics. Her art-driven style gives Henni a more deliberate, measured pacing, allowing the narrative more time to breathe. Andy and Derek also ask her about her earlier semi-autobiographical books, Escape from “Special” and A Mess of Everything, and how those narratives may relate to what she’s doing in her latest graphic novel. The guys ask Miss about her strategies in writing the auto-bio books and what kind of reactions she has received from her fan base. Yet while Escape and Mess may share some links to her new book — both Melissa in the auto-bio books and Henni are curious, questioning young women on a journey — they are nonetheless two distinct projects. While the earlier books were attempts to represent her own life story, Henni is the first of a trilogy of books centered around a fantastic, pre-industrial land populated by anthropomorphic feline characters. Miss may eventually return to her autobiographical writing — although that’s not certain — but she’s definitely deep into and committed to Henni’s story. So we can expect more well-crafted comics from Miss in the coming years.
