ComicsVerse Podcast Episode 48: “Interns Take Over!” — BITCH PLANET

It’s not everyday that you get to participate in one of your first ever podcasts when you have been loving podcasts for years AND you get to do it on one of your favorite comic books ever written. So if I sound a little excited chock it all up to that, but without further ado this is the BITCH PLANET podcast which stars me, Jamie Rice, and my fellow bitches Brian Delpozo and Kathy Wisneski. Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick with art by the amazing Valentine De Landro, BITCH PLANET is a story set in the not so distant future about a group of women that have been sent anyway to the Auxiliary Compliance Outpost a.k.a. Bitch Planet for offenses that range from obesity to non-compliancy.

LISTEN: Want to hear more about comic book works of feminist art/literature? Check out our podcast on Y, THE LAST MAN by Brian K. Vaughan

I think it’s pretty clear from that description what exactly BITCH PLANET is in dialogue with, but if you have an ever growing desire to listen to people talk about the metaphorical resonances of science fiction and what exactly it means to be an angry feminist than this certainly the podcast for you. With only four issues printed (but five is coming very soon!), BITCH PLANET has already managed to take note of many different tropes, and as my favorite Bitch Brian dutifully noted it doesn’t make a joke of a trope, but instead takes a trope and makes it feel real (I know it sounds complicated, but if you listen to the podcast I know it will be more clear).

HEAR: Comics We’re Thankful For: Y, THE LAST MAN and BLANKETS

We also got a chance to talk about what makes Valentine De Landro’s art simultaneously smartly retro and real, and about the ways that BITCH PLANET is a large operatic metaphor while at the same time being a completely realistic reflection of the way that women are treated by men and the way women treat each other in our patriarchal society. If for some reason you have not read BITCH PLANET and are curious about whether or not there is anything there then this is a great podcast to listen to or if you read it and didn’t feel like you got anything out of it I have to say that this conversation enriched me as someone who has read the comics more than once. Basically, it’s worth a listen and all non-compliant bitches are welcome.

The following members of the ComicsVerse family participated in this podcast episode:
Kathleen Wisneski, Jamie Rice and Brian Delpozo

On the Sunday of TCAF (Toronto Comic Arts Festival), Jimmy had breakfast with Chip Zdarsky. And just like the well known dinner podcasts from CNI, this was just as charming with food, drink and conversation.  They chatted about Sex Criminals, Just the Tips, Howard the Duck, Kaptara, Prison Funnies, Monster Cops, brimping, and more! It was a fun and informative chat with comics hot new sex symbol/It Boy! Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love!

Reviews: Drones #1, The Infinite Loop #1, Kaptara #1

After a long absence, the podcast wife Erica Schultz returns! Jimmy is super tired and says some really dumb things in this episode like calling it Episode 603 when it is clearly 604. Plus, pronouncing Jared Leto’s last name wrong even though he realized it later. What a maroon! They chat about the aforementioned Leto’s new promo picture as The Joker, how RDJ’s publicist wisely pulled him out of annoying interview, quick bits on some of the Convergence spin-offs from DC and Fun Home musical gets 12 nominations! News includes: DC Superhero Girls to launch, Jill Thompson working on Wonder Woman graphic novel, Frank Miller returns to Batman, Stan Lee partners with Peter David and Colleen Doran for his graphic memoir, an all female Transformers is coming, Sony is planning a new animated Spider-Man film, Dragon Ball returns to TV after 20 years and more! Comics Alternative Episode 113: Reviews of The Wake, True Stories, Vol. 1, and ODY-C #1

Is Double Ending Dirty?

WakeDeluxeThis week the Two Guys with PhDs (talking about comics) are back for another review episode, and this one is jam-packed with nougaty comics goodness. They begin with Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy’s deluxe edition of The Wake (DC/Vertigo). They had discussed the first couple installments of the ten-issue series on last year’s publisher spotlight on recent Vertigo titles, but now they are able to plunge into the the complete story…and they do so with relish. Both Andy and Derek love the way the narrative unfolds — it’s the kind of work they have come to expect from both Snyder and Murphy — although they do have their quibbles, e.g., unexpected/unlikely surprises in character development and occasional ambiguous transitions. But overall, the guys feel this is an outstanding story, an example of what Vertigo does best. TrueStories1Next, they turn to Derf Backderf’s True Stories, Vol. 1 (Alternative Comics), the first of four — or is it five? — collections of the “True Stories” pieces culled from Backderf’s comic strip, The City, between 1990 and 2014. While there are a few vignettes in this title that verge on belittlement, the collection as a whole is a discerning, satirical, and hilarious look at the state of our contemporary culture. Finally, Derek and Andy look at one of the new #1s coming out of Image Comics this month, Matt Fraction and Christian Ward’s ODY-C. This is an inverted retelling of Homer’s Odyssey, where genders are switched and the ODYC1high seas become the far reaches of space. This is a dense, immersive narrative that requires multiple readings. Knowledge of The Odyssey isn’t necessary, but it wouldn’t hurt for readers to have their copies of Edith Hamilton’s Mythology (or perhaps have Wikipedia) readily at hand when turning through Fraction’s narrative. And Ward’s art is what makes this first issue truly stand out, visually stunning and almost surreal, a nice pairing with one of the guys’ favorite comics storytellers. All in all, this was a fun week of reading!

Arc Reactions Podcast – S08 – Emerald City Comicon 2014 Recap

Emerald City Comicon 2014 is over. Dylan and I had a great time there wearing our podcast shirts (thanks to Leigh Newman). We talked to so many people and saw some great panels and interviews.

ECCC also marks our 1 year anniversary of working on the show. It was last year at the con that Dylan and I discussed Avengers Vs. X-men and decided that we wanted to do a podcast where we record our discussions about comic book story arcs.

Also, this is our first “live” episode. We recorded this earlier this evening after getting home from the show. We had a great time and look forward to going again next year.

Let’s Talk Comics: Episode 018 – Christian Ward

LTC18_Brick_Ward

This week on the Let’s Talk Comics podcast we welcome artist Christian Ward to the show. Christian’s style is one that is positively unmistakable and one that is going to make waves in comics. An art teacher by day, Christian is clearly a student of the medium and doing everything he can to make his mark on this industry. He got his first pro comics gig with the Atomic Robo team, then went to work with Nathan Edmondson on Olympus and later did Infinite Vacation with Nick Spencer. With an upcoming creator owned series coming out from Image Comics with writer Matt Fraction, he’s a picture perfect example that it’s never too late to jump into making comics. And thats not all because Christian’s work can also be seen gracing the covers of some current Marvel comics!

Feed It Comics ep. 14 | “Four Horseman of the Podcopalypse”

ep-14

The master needs his menu prepared for the next month so the Order of Caretakers employs the temporary assistance of Josh from Apocalypse Later to present offerings. Let me be clear, this episode is an utter DEBACLE disguised as a good production, but what resulted was more endearingly idiosyncratic than one would hope.

So yes, we actually talk about somewhat current comics, and even though an entire hilarious segment was accidentally NOT recorded, and Brother Oberts had the gall to suggest we burn Avengers in the incinerator, a Frankenstein of a listenable show has come together. Please join us as we feed it comics…

If you enjoy the show, PLEASE make it a point to leave us a review on itunes, it would be incredibly cool of you and it will help us jump up in the standings. Surely you want the whole world to have access to such premium free media! Also, there is a comment section below meant for discussions.
