Episode 59: Interview with LAZARUS’s Greg Rucka

https://soundcloud.com/comicsverse/episode-59-interview-with-greg-rucka-image-marvel-dc-writer

The latest episode of the ComicsVerse podcast is here! This time, we’re joined by a bonafide legend in the comic book industry — Greg Rucka!

Few comic book creators have a career as prolific as Greg Rucka’s career. He’s written nearly every major character that exists between Marvel and DC Comics, has created some of the best creator-owned series to date (LAZARUS, BLACK MAGICK, QUEEN & COUNTRY), has won numerous awards for these works, and most recently wrote the very first in-continuity post RETURN OF THE JEDI STAR WARS comic book for Marvel Comics in STAR WARS: SHATTERED EMPIRE!

HEAR: Want more ComicsVerse Podcast interviews? The gang sits down with current SUPERMAN writer — Gene Luen Yang!

Comicsverse Editor-In-Chief Travis Czap, Matthew Murphy, Kevin (from Kevin’s Comics on Youtube) and Chief Operating Officer, Sean Bartley (that’s me!), had an in-depth conversation with Greg about some of his classic works, but the bulk of the conversation stemmed far beyond the content of the comics he has created.

During this candid conversation, Greg Rucka discussed the challenges of publishing LAZARUS, as well as some of the terrifying real-world inspirations behind the story of the hit comic book series. He also talked at length about his ten years as a writer for DC where he wrote highly praised series’ such as GOTHAM CENTRAL and DETECTIVE COMICS starring Batwoman.

As long and as deep as this conversation was, it felt as though we’d never run out of things to talk about and, time permitting, could have spoken all night about not only Rucka’s stellar career, but the deep sociopolitical issues that are so deeply relevant right now and serve as major inspirations for LAZARUS.

LISTEN: Want to break into the comics industry? INJECTION and MOON KNIGHT artist — Declan Shalvey, tells you how in this podcast!

If you haven’t yet given LAZARUS or Greg’s new series BLACK MAGICK a chance, do yourself a favor and pick them up. Greg Rucka has been telling stories through novels, video games and comic books for almost twenty years, and he’s putting out some of his best work today.

Thank you to Mr. Rucka for chatting with us, and be sure to check out our incredible conversation with Greg, and stay tuned to ComicsVerse for more amazing podcast guests and in-depth analysis of the best comic books past and present!

Don’t forget to show us some love, leave a comment, post, tweet, or blog our Greg Rucka interview!

Alternate Reality – Episode #371

We’re celebrating Independence Day here at Alternate Reality and that means three things; cookouts, fireworks, and comics. And while we partake of the first two privately with our families we share our love of comics with all you here on Alternate Reality. This week Chris actually gets to talk about a Marvel book as he discusses Hawkeye, per his contractual obligation. Jon is a little disappointed in the new Batman/Superman team-up book. And lastly, Charlie talks about sex with cadavers in his review of Fury Max. It’s a star spangled good time and you don’t want to miss it. And remember, in the words of Optimus Prime, “Freedom is the right of all sentient beings.” We couldn’t agree more. Also remember the words of Abraham Lincoln when he said, “Be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!!!”

Enjoy!!!

Comic News Insider Episode 481 – Heroes Con Panel: From Indie to Mainstream and Back w/ Becky Cloonan/Kelly Sue DeConnick/Robbi Rodriguez!

Comic News Insider: Episode 481 is now available for free download! Click on the link or get it through iTunes! Sponsored by Dynamic Forces.

Reviews: Age of Ultron #10AI, Batman/Superman #1, Lazarus, Uncanny #1

Jimmy flies solo again due to time constraints and briefly chats about his SDCC press woes being solved, attending his friend Kim Boekbinder’s album release party and trying to get Suicide Girl Soya on the podcast while at SDCC. News includes: DC Comics Vertigo imprint is bringing 6 new titles this fall, Comixology offers subscriptions and bundles and Starz announces 2 new series in Outlander and Black Sails. And, it’s the third and final of three panels that Jimmy moderated at Heroes Con a few weeks ago. This one dealt with going from indie comics to mainstream and back. It featured Becky Cloonan, Kelly Sue DeConnick and Robbi Rodriguez. Jimmy was a bit under the weather so isn’t his normal chatty moderating self. Thankfully, he had smart, entertaining and talkative panelists! Great discussion about how they got started and where they are now.  Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love!
