Comics Alternative Podcast Episode 62: A Roundtable Discussion on Licensed Comics

Fully Licensed for Your Listening Pleasure

LicensedComicsThe Two Guys with PhDs (Talking about Comics) are back with another roundtable discussion, and this time the topic is licensed comics. Joining them again are their podcasting pals, John Mayo from The Comic Book Page and Chris Marshall from Collected Comics Library. Springing from Chris’s suggestion that they talk about licensed properties — and fostered by Andy’s uncanny fascination with ROM and The Micronauts — the four comics dudes cover a wide swath of pop culture history regarding the trans-media nature of certain properties. There’s a lot to talk about with this topic, and the guys try to get as much in as they can. Along the way they discuss comic-book manifestations of Star TrekStar WarsG. I. JoeMy Little PonyDoctor WhoMacGyver, The Bionic Man, Doc Savage, The Spirit, The Monkees, various Disney properties, and personality-based comics such those published on The Beatles, Bob Hope, and Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis (one of Derek’s favorites). The four guys all highlight their favorite licensed titles, and they even propose a few new possibilities as a sort of wish list.

This week’s incidental music is brought to you by

Episode 46 Bonus Feature: Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis in Action!

This week on the show, Andy and Derek interview Matt Fraction, and during the conversation they talk a lot about Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Here are a couple of clips of what they referred to in the interview. Enjoy, won’t you?

“The Hair Stylist” skit from The Dean Martin Show, with Jimmy Steward and Orson Welles.

The “Bat Lady, Fat Lady” scene from Martin & Lewis’s 1955 film, Artists and Models. And yes, that’s Shirley MacLaine looking hot as the Bat Lady.

Comics Alternative Podcast Episode 46: An Interview with Matt Fraction

“Whiskey dick does have a sound effect.”

MattFractionThis week the Two Guys with PhDs Talking about Comics are excited to have as their guest creator extraordinaire, Matt Fraction. They talk with Matt specifically about his new series through Image Comics, Satellite Sam (with Howard Chaykin on art) and Sex Criminals (with Chip Zdarsky), but they also take the opportunity to discuss other works of his, such as the current Hawkeye series, his Casanova comics, and graphic novels such as The Five Fists of Science. Perhaps one of the most enlightening moments of the interview concerns issue #2 of Satellite Sam, where Matt points out that you can indeed letter the sound of “whiskey dick.” But comics aren’t all that the guys discuss. Andy, Derek, and Matt also spend a lot of time talking about

It’s a veritable smorgasbord of pop cultural fun! However, Andy comes away from the experience a changed man, wondering if his love of everything Dean Martin has all been for naught. “Nothing gold can stay, Ponyboy.”

Episode 6 – The Dark Knight “First Impressions” Review

Has The BAT Jumped The SHARK?

Well, here it is!! You’ve heard about it, you’ve read about it, now listen to this legendary episode for yourself!! Yes, friends, there actually were people that :gasp: DIDN’T LIKE The Dark Knight!!

Join The Freaks, Chris Honeywell and Scott H. Gardner, for their MOST CONTROVERSIAL EPISODE EVER (yes, even MORE controversial than the ancient astronauts episode!!) in which they treat Christopher Nolan’s so-called “epic” the way Ozzie Osbourne treats a bat’s head.

Yeah, yeah, they know — you LOVED it, right? The whole damned world loved it. But maybe now…..after the initial rush has worn off and you’ve come down off that Mountain Dew-induced nerd-high, maybe, just maybe, you can spot some of the chips and cracks in this current Caped Crusader’s nipple-free batsuit, too…

Or not…

ENJOY!!
