Comic Timing – Episode 184: Changing Political Climates and Comics

lexluthor

As the title implies, Comic Timing goes political this episode, partially as some catharsis after the events of the past few weeks, and also as a way to try and explain and further understand the political climate, and how it effects the comic book industry. Brandon Christopher of Pop Culture Clash, Donovan Moragn Grant of Questions, We Don’t Have Answers, Brent Kossina and Ian Levenstein discuss the decision made by Humberto Ramos and George Perez to refuse attending conventions in Red States after the President Elect takes office, as well as comic shops refusing to stock Motor Crush issue 1 because it has a black female lead. We also discuss tangential political topics that are not entirely comic related, but are still relevant to the overall conversation.

This episode may not be for everyone, but I really do feel like there is some excellent conversation within. No punches were pulled, but everyone involved did their best to be respectful while speaking their minds. Give it a listen and see for yourself!

Deconstructing Comics #523: Who is Wonder Woman?

Wonder Woman: Earth OneOf course she’s been around for decades, but when it comes to how the character’s been presented, there’s always been a tension between her feminist qualities and the pinup-y ones. Is she here to empower women or excite men? Can it be both?

This week Emmet and John are here to talk about the genesis of a DC marquee character and how she’s been presented by various creators, with an emphasis on Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette’s Wonder Woman: Earth One, and a useful comparison of Wonder Woman comics and the movie Mad Max: Fury Road.

Where Monsters Dwell 230 with Marv Wolfman

WMD 230

This week on Where Monsters Dwell we welcome another legend of the comic book industry, Marv Wolfman to the Monster Cave. You know Marv’s work from The New Teen Titans for which he created Cyborg, Starfire and Raven. He’s also the man responsible for Tomb of Dracula, Blade and Bullseye, Daredevil’s recurring nemesis at Marvel. He is perhaps best known for his (at the time) unprecedented overhaul of the DC Universe along with George Perez on Crisis On Infinite Earths. He joins us to chat about all of this and much more and to take your questions, so if you have a question for Rafael, feel free to post it on our Facebook wall or give us a call at 506-453-4949.

Also; ‘Shit Comics Reviewers Say’; Last week we picked up Savage Wolverine #1 and John Byrne’s The High Ways #1 from Strange Adventures.

Long Box Review Episode 29: New Teen Titans: Games Review with Peter Rios

Welcome to part two of my conversation with Mr. Peter Rios. We spend the majority of the episode talking about New Teen Titans: Games (warning: spoilers) and our love of the New Teen Titans in general. Near the end, Peter talks about the fundraiser to send Julian Lytle to Morrisoncon, and then Peter discusses what’s coming next month from him. It’s not to be missed!

Peter made my weekend by cohosting the show with me, and I can’t thank him enough. 🙂

Thanks for listening!

Episode #218 Part IV: MegaCon 2012: Titans Forever! Panel!

Episode #218 Part IV: MegaCon 2012: Titans Forever! Panel

Left to Right, Nick Cardy, George Pérez and D.an Jurgens.

Three eras of Teen Titans stories came together at MegaCon Saturday afternoon when original TEEN TITANS artist Nick Cardy was joined by George Pérez, who drew the Titans in what was probably their most popular era, and Dan Jurgens, writer and artist of the Titans during the mid to late 1990’s. The panelists shared stories about working on Titans stories and answering questions from the audience, including their views about the New 52 version of the Titans.

Thanks go out to Nick Cardy, George Pérez and Dan Jurgens for allowing me to record their panel and post it for this episode.

Coming up from MegaCon 2012:

Creating Believable and Memorable Characters In Science Fiction and Fantasy, hosted by Glenda Finkelstein and Bob McCall.

Creating Your Comic/Manga Part II: Drawing Through Storytelling, hosted by husband and wife comic book creators Adam Withers and Comfort Love.

The Ins And Outs Of Indy Publishing, hosted by Glenda Finkelstein, Bob McCall, Gary Roen, Trevor Rueckert and Marni Knight Duncan.

Nick Cardy: The Artist At War, hosted by Renee Witterstaetter.

Tales of the Justice Society of America #44

0d9c

WE’RE BACK!

That’s right, folks.  Despite previous reports of the demise of TALES OF THE JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA the show is NOT dead.  In fact, Scott and Mike are back on a WEEKLY basis so Fridays just got interesting again.

This time out the guys pick up where they left off, but surprisingly they will not be covering the next issue of ALL-STAR SQUADRON.  Starting this week Mike and Scott will be covering one of the best stories to come out of this era of ALL-STAR SQUADRONCRISIS ON EARTH PRIME.  Not only is this a major story-arc for the All-Stars but it also crosses over with another DC title namely JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA!  This is almost historic because while books crossover into each other all the time these days when this story was published it was like rare.

CRISIS ON EARTH PRIME begins in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #207 and this one has it all, folks!  The Justice Society!  The Justice League!  The Crime Syndicate!  The All-Star Squadron (for all of five seconds)!  Sonny and Cher!  William Shatner!  The 1972 Miami Dolphins!  Paul Lynde!  Bea Arthur!  The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders!

Ok, 95% of those people don’t appear in this issue, but it’s a pretty awesome story anyway.  There is action, intrigue, super-heroes and time travel.  All the things a growing comic fan needs.

Next Week: ALL-STAR SQUADRON #14 and the second part of CRISIS ON EARTH PRIME!

Episode #171 Part III: MegaCon 2011 Spotlight On George Pérez Panel!

The George Pérez panel was the second panel I attended at MegaCon, on Friday, March 25, 2011. The previous panel ended late, and so the audio for this panel begins in the middle of George speaking. It was an entertaining and informative presentation of his career and some of his interests outside of comic books.
