Thoughts of a Master

On this interview episode Derek talks with Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth about his new book Sparring with Gil Kane: Debating the History and Aesthetics of Comics. It’s a collection of thirteen interviews, conversations, and panel transcripts focusing on Kane and his aesthetics. The pieces that Groth collects highlight the legendary artist’s thoughts on the potential and limitations of the medium, his relationship with other creators, and Kane’s place within the larger context of comics history. As Groth reveals, this book was long in the making, and it’s the first of several Gil Kane-related works that Fantagraphics will publish in the coming years.

Also we’d like to announce our first ever #stumpthegeekspeak winner! Congratulations to Jeff Fisher! Jeff is one of our many twitter followers and the first to correctly respond to the question: Who in the DC universe created the drug that venom is based on?

We originally were looking for Bannerman Pharmaceuticals who created the miraclo drug which venom is based on. However that was not clear in the question. So the next best answer is Doctor Randolph Porter who created the drug in the Batman Venom story line. So Jeff was the first to give that answer.

What does he win? Bragging rights of course! No one can debate his geek/comic book cred for the next week. We are humbled by his great knowledge and tremble before his geek might!

Follow Jeff on Twitter and hopefully some of his greatness will rub of on you: https://twitter.com/jeffncarrie4234

Do you want to share in Jeff’s glory? Take a stab at the #stumpthegeekspeak question of the week: Which publisher was the first to publish a Captain Marvel comic book? Bonus why is there a captain Marvel at both DC and Marvel?

Two True Freaks! Episode 269 – Star Wars Monthly Monday 42

0d9c

After a month with the monkey, The Freaks are back on format!!

That means new reviews of Marvel Star Wars and Indiana Jones comics!  Whoo-hoo!!  But first — there’s some housecleaning,  some thank yous to the listeners, Chris plugs the Two True Freaks Tumblr page, and Scott catches up on his Star Wars Expanded Universe book reviews.

Also, Chris runs afoul of a Sith child at a garage sale , the much-anticipated Star Wars Celebration event is discussed, and Scott goes to Disney’s Hollywood Studios for Star Wars Weekends (and brings back some awesome surprises)!!

Then, it’s on to the comics!!  Unfortunately, these aren’t the most stellar issues ever reviewed on this show, but that just means that The Freaks have to pull out their greatest defense mechanism – HUMOR!

It’s a MASSIVE EPISODE!  MASSIVE!

Enjoy!!

Tales of the Justice Society of America #30

0d9c

Welcome to a kind of… off-beat episode of the TALES OF THE JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA!

This week, Scott and Mike continue their examination of other JSAer/Earth-2 related stories by focusing on the Golden Age Green Lantern himself — Alan Scott!!

First, the guys look at THE FLASH (Vol. 1) #268 and, to be honest, this comic turned out to have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Alan Scott!! Oh, sure the Golden Age Green Lantern is right there on the freakin’ cover, but it all turns out to be a trick!! An evil, evil trick. And not only that, but the story itself sucks so badly it actually has its own event horizon!!

Then it’s on to the Golden Age Green Lantern back-up stories from GREEN LANTERN (Vol. 2) #s 108 to 110 where the Earth-2 GL has to fight for his life against another bearer of the Green Flame!!

Finally, in Green Lantern #s 111 and 112, the Earth-1 and Earth-2 Green Lanterns team-up and, wouldn’t you know it, Green Arrow hangs around like the fifth wheel he is. Seriously, the dude serves no function to the story whatsoever. Okay, so he shared top billing with Green Lantern on this title… but still!! C’mon! He’s just so freakin’ annoying!! Anyhow, this adventure does deal with an alien entity stealing the Starheart. What’s the Starheart, you ask? Well, you’ll just have to listen to find out now, won’t you?

Be sure to stick around afterward as Scott makes a STARTLING ANNOUNCEMENT CONCERNING THE FUTURE OF TALES OF THE JSA PODCAST! YOU MUST HEAR THIS!
