ComicsVerse Podcast Episode 67: Analyzing Scott Snyder’s BATMAN

Scott Snyder may be a household name these days for Batman fans, but this was not always the case.  It was only 5 years ago, in 2011, that he began his run on DETECTIVE COMICS, which earned him quite the reputation.   His writing for DC has continued into the New 52, and you can still read his writing on BATMAN AND ROBIN ETERNAL.

In this episode of the ComicsVerse podcast, we focus on Scott Snyder’s beginnings with Batman.  From BLACK MIRROR, his first collected Batman trade paperback, to COURT OF OWLS and CITY OF OWLS, the first two volumes of the New 52 BATMAN, we analyze and explore common themes throughout Scott Snyder’s writings.

BLACK MIRROR, interestingly, occurs while Dick Grayson is taking Bruce’s place as Batman, and Scott Snyder came in swinging.  With writing that fits the darkness of Batman’s Gotham City and an all-new villain, BLACK MIRROR is a strong freshman effort for Snyder.  He adds depth to every character he utilizes, developing history and rewriting the past.

This is one of the recurring techniques Snyder uses in his BATMAN storylines– the use of history.  BLACK MIRROR, GATES OF GOTHAM, and his work in the New 52 all explore the hidden secret history of the founding and original construction of the city, interweaving this with the histories of the characters themselves.  The past is brought into the present, and we see how history influences current events in mysterious ways.

THE COURT OF OWLS and THE CITY OF OWLS almost beg to be read together.  Exploring the idea that a secret society has been ruling Gotham from the shadows for centuries, we see Batman brought to the brink of insanity.  He is captured and placed in the Court’s labyrinth with their assassin, the Talon.  Their ultimate plan is to come out of the shadows in a glorious display of power and take over Gotham at last.  It’s one hell of a rollercoaster ride, and was a great way to kick-off the New 52!
