Episode 83 of the ComicsVerse Podcast centers around sex in comics! ComicsVerse Comics and Managing Culture Editor Jamie Rice is joined by panelists Bob Franco, Dellen Miller, Phil Casey, Matt Murphy, Mark Bouchard, and Kay Honda!
In this episode, our panelists discuss books like SEX CRIMINALS, CATWOMAN, and SAGA in an attempt to unpackage the way in which sex and sexuality function in comic narratives. First, they recount the days of the CCA, or Comics Code of America, and the impact that it had on the American comics industry before moving on to discuss the idea of feminist sex in comics. The comics industry has and continues to suffer from a lack of female creators- thus, female characters are often both written and drawn by men, often leading to the character catering to the male gaze. Our panelists unpackage the intent behind the characters, as well as the actions taken by the characters themselves, to see just what makes a depiction of sex, “feminist.” They unpackage how real world attitudes about sex culture, such as the double standard that exists between men and women regarding promiscuity, and how they function in the real world.
In addition to this, our panelists explore the world of fetishism and erotic comics before moving on to a discussion about consent and rape in terms of a handful of comics, including NIGHTWING and KAIJUMAX. Going further, the panelists discuss whether or not rape should be present in comics at all, and the use of trigger warnings.
With a reading list comprised of superhero and non-cape comics, this podcast was so intense, and had so many puns, that it couldn’t be contained in just one segment, so stay tuned for part two!

Melissa Dowell joins Jimmy in studio for this solemn remembrance of the legendary Darwyn Cooke. They chat about his legacy and some of their favorite works. Jimmy was lucky enough to have known Darwyn over the years (see previous post on CNI website) having interviewed him a few times and hung out at various comic shows. The comic world lost a great one but his work will live on and you must check it out if you haven’t. Producer Joe also helped put together a compilation of the 3 interviews that CNI did with Darwyn over the years and will release it later this week. Still great talks and Darwyn gives great insight into his work. News includes: DC Comics gets a new logo (again), Agent Carter and The Muppets are officially cancelled, Supergirl moves to The CW for season 2, Disney Tsum Tsum plush toys are coming to Marvel comics, an X-Force film is being developed, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will get a spin-off movie, San Diego Comic Con may be creating a special Comic Con awards show, New York Comic Con will require fan verification for all attendees and more! Jim and Eric get together to talk all of this week’s DC Comics comic books and news and this week was a little better. The books, not them as Jim gets flashbacks of being a special needs punching bag and Eric realizes that he may have tried to abduct himself using an ice cream truck. They also learn that a fellow named Glen thinks they have a podcast full of curse words and awfulness…and then go out of their way to prove him right! We also get a full dose of Reggie’s Recklessness and Ryan Clark’s Other Side segment so sit back and enjoy the nonsense.
DC Comics News: Suicide Squad will be PG-13, Aquaman movie gets new writer and there maybe a new Doom Patrol Comic coming.
Ryan Clark’s Other Side Review: The Goddamned #1
Jim and Eric continue the fun this week by discussing all the DC Comics and DC Comic News that two grown men can take. Along the way, we all learn that their local comic book shop still sucks, Jim doesn’t really pay attention to the news and Eric has a lot of friends who all have ridiculous nicknames. Jim also continues his nyquil addiction…but it’s all for the good of the podcast. When they get to the books, they don’t agree as usual, but Jim does convince Eric that We are Robin wasn’t as bad as he first thought. Jim:1 Eric: 0 Enjoy!
DC Comics News: Flamingo cast in Gotham, Court of the Owls Coming to Gotham, Checkmate added to Legends of Tomorrow, DC Comics owns the Batmobile
It’s been a tough couple of weeks in Weird Science Land…After the fallout from Eric’s Batman #44 review started to settle, Twitter decided to flag the site as “malicious”! Delicious maybe, but malicious? While Eric tries to calm the ship, Jim has conspiracy theories and is just generally pissed off. After Jim loses his voice and takes too much cold medicine, they hunker down to talk some comics and actually end up in a pretty good mood. Who knows what the future holds, but one things for sure, “Bricks no hit back”.
Jim and Eric get together this week to talk comics, Star Wars…who am I kidding?!? They get together to bitch and moan about the shit storm surrounding Eric’s less than flattering review of Batman #44. It really had Eric down the whole week and Jim does nothing to help his buddy feel better. They also breakdown most of this week’s books (including Batman #44) and have a very extended version of The Other Side talking Star Wars with Ryan. Of course, there is also DC Comics News, Listener Mail and Reggie’s Recklessness. It’s another long one, but we hope you enjoy it.
Episode 31: With fewer books to talk about, Jim and Eric keep it under three hours. Eric shows his excitement that Charles Band follows him on Twitter and Jim gets upset at a listener mail making fun of his voice. They also talk about all the DC Comics that came out this week, discuss the news, read listener mail and bitch and moan. Reggie’s Recklessness features his opinions on the Killing Joke and Ryan reviews This Damned Band #1. Dan got food poisoning so there is no Geek News this week, but Jim threatens to do it himself…as Dan.
