Comic Timing – Episode 184: Changing Political Climates and Comics

lexluthor

As the title implies, Comic Timing goes political this episode, partially as some catharsis after the events of the past few weeks, and also as a way to try and explain and further understand the political climate, and how it effects the comic book industry. Brandon Christopher of Pop Culture Clash, Donovan Moragn Grant of Questions, We Don’t Have Answers, Brent Kossina and Ian Levenstein discuss the decision made by Humberto Ramos and George Perez to refuse attending conventions in Red States after the President Elect takes office, as well as comic shops refusing to stock Motor Crush issue 1 because it has a black female lead. We also discuss tangential political topics that are not entirely comic related, but are still relevant to the overall conversation.

This episode may not be for everyone, but I really do feel like there is some excellent conversation within. No punches were pulled, but everyone involved did their best to be respectful while speaking their minds. Give it a listen and see for yourself!

You can e-mail the show at comictiming@gmail.com and be sure to Like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/ComicTiming. Thanks again for listening, and we’ll see you next time for Doctor Strange, Luke Cage and more!

ComicsVerse Podcast Episode 49: Interns Take Over! — BATGIRL in “Batgirl of Burnside”

Welcome to another entry of the ComicsVerse podcast, “Interns Take Over!”  This podcast series allows members of the ComicsVerse staff and interns to dedicate episodes to storylines and collections of their choosing. For my pick, I decided to go with BATGIRL: BATGIRL OF BURNSIDE (which collects issues #35 – #40 of the current BATGIRL and material from DC COMICS SECRET ORIGINS #12) series co-written by Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher, with art by Babs Tarr over layouts by Stewart.

CLICK: Want more BATGIRL? Check out this written review of Stewart and Tarr’s BATGIRL: “Batgirl of Burnside!”

I’ve been an avowed fan of the re-launch since it began, hence why I suggested it in the first place. However the other members of the panel bring completely different perspectives to our analysis. Both Alex Katz and Josh Cui have extensive familiarity with the New 52 Bat-Verse and were wary of the new approach in BATGIRL. On the other side of the spectrum, neither Jamie Rice nor Kay Honda had previously read any Batgirl comics but had a lot of things to say!

WATCH: Exclusive Interview with BATGIRL co-writer Brenden Fletcher.

Bringing together all these various viewpoints, we were able to examine all facets of the collection including the plot, Babs Tarr’s artwork, the changes to Barbara Gordon’s characterization, the Burnside setting, the villains, the supporting cast, the book’s use of social media and hipster culture and Batgirl’s new costume. In addition, we examine several of the controversies that have erupted around the arc, including the controversial character Dagger Type and the changes made to his issue for the collection, and the idea of Barbara Gordon drinking and having a hangover. We even take a slight detour to discuss the controversy surrounding the aborted BATGIRL #42 Killing Joke variant cover controversy.

We had a great time recording this, and hope you all have a great time listening to it, whether you’re a Batgirl super-fan or a novice.

Wayne’s Comics Podcast #168 With Babs Tarr

Wayne's Comics, Wayne Hall, Batgirl, Babs Tarr, Barbara Gordon, Burnside, Gotham City, Black Canary, Cameron Stewart, DC Comics,

Now at a comics shop near you – Batgirl #40, the last issue before DC begins their Convergence event!  Here’s the description: “A decision Barbara made during her darkest days in Gotham City returns to haunt her! What was it? And how does it tie into the evil impostor Batgirl? Find out here!”

To celebrate, I have a very special interview with Babs Tarr, artist and collaborator on Batgirl! We chat about what process she went through to be chosen for this gig, what it’s like to be a woman comics creator and also a woman comics reader, and how much she enjoys working with the other folks on this tremendously popular title!

Thanks so much to Pamela Horvath and Steven Solomon from DC Comics for making this interview happen!

V for Vertigo, Episode 105: We Have Heart

This is a short episode this week, but I do cover a lot of ground like the UFC, Majesty, organic food, and culture differences. Listen as my voice gets progressively worse throughout the episode. There was a lot of editing done.

I soldier through and cover The Vinyl Underground: Watching the Detectives (Si Spencer, Simon Gane, Cameron Stewart), which is very similar to every other English comic that takes place in London I’ve read. But it’s better than some, worse than others.
