Comic Timing – Episode 184: Changing Political Climates and Comics

lexluthor

As the title implies, Comic Timing goes political this episode, partially as some catharsis after the events of the past few weeks, and also as a way to try and explain and further understand the political climate, and how it effects the comic book industry. Brandon Christopher of Pop Culture Clash, Donovan Moragn Grant of Questions, We Don’t Have Answers, Brent Kossina and Ian Levenstein discuss the decision made by Humberto Ramos and George Perez to refuse attending conventions in Red States after the President Elect takes office, as well as comic shops refusing to stock Motor Crush issue 1 because it has a black female lead. We also discuss tangential political topics that are not entirely comic related, but are still relevant to the overall conversation.

This episode may not be for everyone, but I really do feel like there is some excellent conversation within. No punches were pulled, but everyone involved did their best to be respectful while speaking their minds. Give it a listen and see for yourself!

The last of the Heroes Con interviews are upon us! Jimmy sat down with Brenden Fletcher for a long overdue interview about his work on Gotham Academy, Batgirl, Black Canary and more. Jimmy’s old friend Rebecca joins him in studio in the rotating co-host chair and they have a lengthy (sorry) discussion about that Game of Thrones finale. They discuss a PR email and Jimmy is ecstatic over a Steranko tweet to him. News includes: Cerebus returns, Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl also return in comic book form, IDW is bringing us a new Star Trek anthology, the new Mortal Kombat film has cast 12 major roles, the second volume of the music of DC comics is coming, the 2016 NJ Superhero weekend at Comic Fusion is again holding their annual event in August. Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Also, get a hold of us!

Weird Science DC Comics Podcast Episode 33: “Late Night Sleepover Fun”

JUSTL_Cv41_marquee_54ff988b458205.89598968

ep 33: “Late Night Sleepover Fun” With not a lot of news, but plenty of Listener Mail and Comic Books, Jim and Eric get down to business and talk and talk and talk…  While they couldn’t remember the name of seminal band, Sugar Ray, they did remember Welcome Back Kotter, Guns and Roses and Third Eye Blind among other nonsense.  They are also joined by Reggie for his Recklessness and Ryan Clark’s Other Side segment featuring Welcome Back #1.  All that was missing is a stuffed crust pizza and a Puppet Master movie to make this a throwback sleepover extravaganza!

ComicsVerse Podcast Episode 49: Interns Take Over! — BATGIRL in “Batgirl of Burnside”

Welcome to another entry of the ComicsVerse podcast, “Interns Take Over!”  This podcast series allows members of the ComicsVerse staff and interns to dedicate episodes to storylines and collections of their choosing. For my pick, I decided to go with BATGIRL: BATGIRL OF BURNSIDE (which collects issues #35 – #40 of the current BATGIRL and material from DC COMICS SECRET ORIGINS #12) series co-written by Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher, with art by Babs Tarr over layouts by Stewart.

CLICK: Want more BATGIRL? Check out this written review of Stewart and Tarr’s BATGIRL: “Batgirl of Burnside!”

I’ve been an avowed fan of the re-launch since it began, hence why I suggested it in the first place. However the other members of the panel bring completely different perspectives to our analysis. Both Alex Katz and Josh Cui have extensive familiarity with the New 52 Bat-Verse and were wary of the new approach in BATGIRL. On the other side of the spectrum, neither Jamie Rice nor Kay Honda had previously read any Batgirl comics but had a lot of things to say!

WATCH: Exclusive Interview with BATGIRL co-writer Brenden Fletcher.

Bringing together all these various viewpoints, we were able to examine all facets of the collection including the plot, Babs Tarr’s artwork, the changes to Barbara Gordon’s characterization, the Burnside setting, the villains, the supporting cast, the book’s use of social media and hipster culture and Batgirl’s new costume. In addition, we examine several of the controversies that have erupted around the arc, including the controversial character Dagger Type and the changes made to his issue for the collection, and the idea of Barbara Gordon drinking and having a hangover. We even take a slight detour to discuss the controversy surrounding the aborted BATGIRL #42 Killing Joke variant cover controversy.

We had a great time recording this, and hope you all have a great time listening to it, whether you’re a Batgirl super-fan or a novice.
