Show Notes:

We smush the final three volumes of Yukito Kishiro’s Battle Angel Alita Angel of Chaos (v7), Fallen Angel (v8), and Angel’s Ascension (v9) into this sloppy and juicy wrap up episode.

Nick was underwhelmed by the end of the series, Hank was highly confused by it, and Jason absolutely loves it (he may have even cried a little bit).

After the end theme, Hank makes a jarring announcement. Due to improprieties and severe mismanagement (certainly in large part related to the inappropriate content covered in this podcast series) the Auditing Committee has decided the future of the Allegheny Teen Center Reading Program and it’s not good.

In light of the AudioShocker’s impending retirement, the kids at the Allegheny Teen Center have brainstormed a list of questions about art, comics, life, and other stuff. AND WE ANSWER THEM!

We debate… message boards vs. tumblr!

The teens ask:

  • Do you have any pop cultural phases that you totally regret?
  • What are we missing out on by only reading comics collected in trades?
  • Coloring books versus paint-by-numbers?
  • If someone has an idea for a webcomic, can they make it up as they go along or do they need to write it all out first?

Also, we ask the teens some questions! Why do they like stupid stuff? What’s the deal with Adventure Time? And many more.

Plus, we briefly the discuss the new audit Teen Center is undergoing in light of some troubling events that have occurred recently. And of course, after the end theme we name the Teen of the Week.

Garfield.
Loved and reviled.
A comic strip so mundane that it’s become quasi-controversial.

On this episode, we contrast and compare Garfield in January 1984 to Garfield in January 2014.

Q: How has the comic changed over 30 years?
A: Ummm… is that a trick question?

The art has evolved a bit with Garfield spending more time on his hind legs and doubling the size of his feet. But the jokes and themes are practically interchangeable. It’s impressive how stagnant consistent it’s been over three decades.

After the end theme, we read the latest Allegheny Teen Center announcement from Hank 300 (who wasn’t able to record this episode with us due to a catastrophic Super Bowl related internet crisis).

Ido’s in a box. Zapan is a monster. Alita has a gun.

We’ve reached the end of Yukito Kishiro‘s Battle Angel Alita v5: Angel of Redemption, which — as Hank notes — leaves us in a place that’s strangely like the beginning of the series.

We analyze the plot of the story and study its thematic elements. How does the end of this volume hold up to other climactic moments in the series? And have we been paying enough attention to Kishiro’s depictions of female characters?

After the end theme, Hank announces a new Teen Center fundraiser… where the funds are words and math problems!

Show Notes:

We kick things off by giving the 2013 YOU DON’T SUCK Award for Best Celebrity Freakout and/or Nip Slip to Adam Levine, who hates America. He narrowly beat out Tiny Fey’s Emmy nip slip and Amanda Bynes’s bong tossing.

BUT ENOUGH OF THAT! Hank’s returned from his harrowing excursion to Walla Walla to talk about Yukito Kishiro‘s Battle Angel Alita v5: Angel of Redemption wherein the title character becomes a singer-songwriter and Zapan stirs things up.

Ido also confronts fellow Tipharean scientist, Desty Nova, who happens to be a few shades crazier and far more volatile.

We discuss the themes at play, with an emphasis Kishiro’s use of brains and how you can basically plug shit into them. We also do our best to get Hank up to speed, considering he spent the past week at the bottom of a slowly-filling grain silo.

Speaking of which, after the end theme Hank and Nick recount the story of how they got Hank out of that deadly grain silo and extracted Cecily from the brainwashing bakery cult. Plus, now that Hank’s safely back in the Alleghenies, he’s got a Teen Center announcement!

Show Notes:

We talk about Myth of Eustro, a fantastic digital comic by Solomon Mars. It’s a panel-to-panel fantasy story set in the world of Ephon, a land overtaken by a crystal wasteland called the Nightmare Forest.

The main character is Ramona, an Arkseologist who’s working to fight back the expansion of the crystals while seeking to eradicate them completely.

For years, Solomon Mars has created panel-to-panel comics that he shares online as Flash files. But he’s really stepped up the interactivity with Myth of Eustro, layering information about the story of Ramona and the world of Ephon into roll-overs and clickable icons.

The direction of Myth of Eustro is also decided by the fans. At the end of each chapter, Solomon asks readers to choose between two actions for Ramona. Once the votes are in, Solomon crafts a new chapter that takes Ramona and her Famylyr named Ephyx on another adventure.

Since this episode was recorded a couple of weeks early, we’ve got a special update after the end theme… a conversation between Nick and Hank 300 recorded on location in Walla Walla, WA!

Good news? Hank and Cecily are still alive. Bad news? Cecily is brainwashed and Hank is trapped the bottom of a grain mill that’s slowly being filled with flour.

Next Episode:
If Nick, Hank, and Cecily make it out alive, then we’ll have a new podcast for you on Tue Jan 7 wherein we’ll discuss Battle Angel Alita v5 chapters 1-3.

Yukito Kishiro manages to one-up his previous work with the conclusion of Battle Angel Alita v4: Angel of Victory, delivering incredible fight scenes AND fantastic character development AND compelling plot twists.

The tussle between Jashugan and Alita has been percolating for two volumes and it becomes reality in chapter five. Kishiro works a clever flashback sequence into the fight, mixing some tantalizing plot teases into the awesome action.

We marvel at the silent sequences in these chapters and gush about the interesting interactions that occur both on and off the Motor Ball track.

After he end theme, we’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that Hank 300 is alive and still working to help out Cecily, the troubled Teen Center member who recently traveled to Walla Walla, WA to find her birth mother. The bad news is that Cecily has been brainwashed by a bakery cult and Hank needs Nick’s help to extricate her from this surprisingly violent organization.

Yukito Kishiro takes no prisoners as he tears up the Motor Ball track in Battle Angel Alita v4: Angel of Victory chapters 1-2!

Alita valiantly dispenses with her contenders until she reaches Crimson Wind, the enigmatic and mysterious motor baller who’s hungry for a good fight.

Our hero is more than willing to throwdown and thus an epic tussle ensues! We discuss our favorite parts of these action-packed two chapters, gushing about Kishiro’s kickass art and fantastic storytelling.

Other than the awkward and gratuitous (albeit well drawn) Shumira shower scene, everything in this section of the manga goes off without a hitch. There are even some delightfully corny surprises, like Tiegel’s upset victory.

After the end theme, we drop a quick Hank 300 update. If anyone has information regarding the whereabouts of Hank 300 and Cecily, please call the AudioShocker tip line at 412-567-7606.

Rebecca (creator of The Adventures of Gyno-Star) and Nick held a secret competition on Facebook and the winning webcomic is the topic of today’s podcast! Errrrr, uuuhhhhh, sorta. See, we cheated and chose two webcomics: the gorgeous Spindrift and the hilarious Superbitch.

Spindrift is an impressive fantasy tale by Elsa Kroese and Charlotte E. English. It follows the fate of Morwenna, a young woman caught between two opposing cultures filled with magic, mysticism, and mystery.

Unlike most webcomics, Spindrift was born fully formed. It’s a captivating story that flows smoothly from the start. Elsa’s lush art and Charlotte’s smart dialogue make for a gripping reading experience.

Superbitch is a smart and silly superhero story about the sassy character of the same name. She’s surrounded by a couple of charming foils, the college burnout Art Hobo and the tech savvy Quinn.

Kennedy Cooke-Garza is a SCAD student who’s been posting Superbitch online for a couple of years. Reading through her archives is like going on an artistic journey of growth as she experiments with different styles and formats. Regardless of the changes, the writing is always richly layered with clever jokes.

Finally, after the end theme, Nick delivers an update about Hank 300, the missing ATCRP co-host. It wasn’t Twix. IT WAS NEVER TWIX!!!
