Superman Fan Podcast Episode #92: Action Comics Weekly!

Wi!th the release of the 12th and final weekly issue of  WEDNESDAY COMICS, this is the perfect week to feature DC’s first weekly comic book, ACTION COMICS WEEKLY. It ran from issue #601 – 642, from April 1988 – January 1989. Each issue was about 48 pages and contained 7 – 8 page stories of a variety of characters. Each story would run for about six or seven issues, and the cast of main characters featured would rotate. Superman was about the only character that appeared in each issue, in a two page comic strip style story, that was not my favorite of A. C. WEEKLY.

My favorite stories during Action’s weekly run involved BLACKHAWK. These are the only issues I have: #601 – 609, 615 – 622 and 628 – 635.

In this episode I review the basic plot of the Superman story and, in a SUPERMAN FAN PODCAST first, the three BLACKHAWK stories, which led to a short 16 issue BLACKHAWK title in 1989 – 1990.

At the expanded show notes blog I will list the titles and creative teams of the stories for each issue. And at MY PULL LIST blog I will begin a bi-weekly review of these BLACKHAWK issues.

Chronic Insomnia – Issue # 110 Tank Tops and Erica Durance

Chronic Insomnia – The Worlds Worst Comic Book Podcast.  Saving the world one poop joke at a time.

Superman Chronic Small
Issue # 110.  This week is a little different here at Chronic Insomnia.  Ryan was away at the cabin all weekend and he drank copious amounts of alcohol, so that left him unable to prepare for the show.  We decided to switch things up this week; first we review of one of our favorite comic books, and then we have a long discussion of the fan favorite TV show, Smallville.

Friday was the “Smallville” season 9 opener and this week we talk almost exclusively about that show.  Do we still loath the idea of a superman with “no tights, no flights”?  Tune in this week and find out.

Ryan and Mike discuss the final Giant Size Old Man Logan comic book which finally came out last Wednesday.  It’s a big show with Ryan complaining of extreme chest pains and his current software upgrade.  Mike, the current Quincy Jones of podcasting, takes a break from all the technical stuff and just lets this weeks show flow throughout the night.  Stay tuned at the end of the show for a surprise song by the best singer in the world, Dennis Twat.

Check out our good friends at Where Monsters Dwell.  We love those damn Canadians.  If some of you missed it, Mike was on the Where Monsters Dwell show last week for over 30 minutes.  Check out that show if you’re interested to see Mike make a fool of himself.  It’s on the WMD website, so go and check out Remy, Mike, Erin and Red Shirt Ryan on CHSR college radio. We can also be found on the Comics Podcast Network.

We love the all of you!

WCR Episode #17 – “Proof”

itunes wcr logo

If you believe in monsters… you need evidence… wait that’s not it…

Proof   Vol. 1 from Image comics by Alexander Greician and Reily Rossmo

Proof, at it’s heart is a detective story but as you add on the
wonderfully written layers of script and amazing, if not necessarily
orthodox, art, Proof is a detective book like no other!

The book has two main characters, John “Proof” Prufrock, a Sasquatch
and lead detective/investigator for “The Ranch”, and Ginger Brown, a
FBI agent who is transferred out to the ranch after having a run-in
with a Golem.

It is important to note that if you have read this in single issues
prior to picking it up in trade, that the order had been changed. This
being one of the few book that I originally picked up in trade first I
have no idea what the differences are, but I assure you they’re there!

Wednesday Warriors – Episode #22 – General Comic Book Discussions

Episode 22

Whoop! This one’s a dozy folks. We just came off a late night bender from previewing Zombieland. Wow. It’s well worth the price of admission. In fact, since we saw it for free, now we will have to go see it seven more times. Sean Leslie’s already seen it thrice. Sheesh!
