CNI 159 – NY Anime Fest

Reviews: Flash Gordon #1, Back to Brooklyn #1, The Dead: Kingdom of Flies #1

Recaps of the New York Anime Fest/Far East to East Showcase. Well, not so much the Anime Fest. Jimmy attended both and is now in love with Japanese rock. Also, he gives a little recap of the meetup with Natali Del Conte and Amber Macarthur. News includes Branagh on Thor?, Pope’s DKNY clothing line release, Harvey Awards, DC cancels Minx line, Watchmen, Addams Family musical, and a comic explaining sex to 6 year olds. That’s right. Feedback, Top 3 and plugs galore.

Two True Freaks! Episode 8 – Trailer Trash Talk

This week is a more free-form show. The Freaks discuss trailers for Frank Miller’s “The Spirit”, “TR2N”,”Terminator: Salvation” and a remake of “The Day The Earth Stood Still”. Chris throws a fit about garage sale etiquette and Scott invents the phrase “hobby raping”. Add some Firesign Theatre, the Justice League roll call, and a trip to the Freak Museum and you can call it a show. The song featured today in the Freak Museum is “Our Song” by Roger Waters from the soundtrack to the movie “The Body”.

Comic Book Outsiders Episode 25

Bringing you some of the very best hidden gems from the world of independent comics, movies and TV.

In this landmark episode Scott is still away on his international travels so I have another guest co-host who will be familiar to long-time listeners as we interviewed him on a previous episode.

In this episode our Main Feature is an interview with Si Spurrier, the creator of Gutsville from Image Comics. He has also written for 2000AD, and more recently Marvel comics on titles such as Silver Surfer, Wolverine and Ghost Rider.

Instead of a Challenge segment we have a general news and reviews section where we discuss stories that have caught our interest and we still end up with 3 comic pitches in this segment.

It’s my co-host’s turn to step into the confessional for the Guilty Pleasure section, and it is one from a long list of many that he wants to get off his chest.

Our final section as always is the Hidden Gem segment and this episode we’re talking about the film Stardust.

This episode brings a few new changes with a new website, new email addresses and logo, a real CBO facelift to mark out 25th episode. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to get the show this far, and thanks this episode go out to everyone who sent in their best wishes.

If you want to get in touch about anything we’ve talked about in this episode you can email us individually at our new addresses steve (at) or scott (at) As usual you can leave us a review at our myspace, facebook, and libsyn pages, or leave us an iTunes review.

Comic Book Outsiders Episode 24

Bringing you some of the very best hidden gems from the world of independent comics, movies and TV.

In this episode Scott returns but this is our first international episode with Scott overseas in Vancouver.

In our Main Feature we talk about sci-fi and comedy in TV and film, does it work and what are some of our favourites?

Then it’s a Challenge Scott retrospective where we talk about some of the books that I’ve recommended to Scott over the last year and a bit and how it has changed his view of the comics medium and what some of his favourites were.

It’s Steve’s turn to step into the confessional and get something off his chest in this episode’s Guilty Pleasure, but this isn’t one that will go down easy and we discuss it in depth.

Rounding out the episode is our Hidden Gem and this episode it is a movie that perfectly fits the segment, it was given a limited release, Scott had not even heard of it before Steve recently recommended it and we talk about the awesomeness that is In Bruges and why you need to go out and buy it this Christmas.

The Secret Quotation competition has been extended to the end of September. This is because one of the five episodes needed to get one of the answers was delayed, so to make it a bit more fair, and to give people some time to listen to all, we’ve extended it.

You need to send all five quotes, plus the name of the film that they come from to More information about the competition and which episodes you need to listen to can be found at UK Comics Podcast Secret Quotation Page

If you want to get in touch about anything we talk about on this show, then you can email us at or you can now email individually to or or you can visit us on our myspace or facebook pages, or leave an iTunes review or a comment on the libsyn page.

CCL Podcast #188 – Hellboy Library and Others

Collected Comics Library Podcast #188

35,836Kb; 37m 57s

As I mentioned in Monday’s blog, I get a lot of collected editions and because of that many (err most) of them go on the back burner. That is exactly what I did with The Hellboy Library Volume 1 (Dark Horse). I’m ashamed that I did so because it’s turned out to be one of my favorites of 2008. Not only do I feature that book for this weeks’ podcast but I also skim over Volume 2 (due out next week), The Art of Hellboy HC and The Hellboy Companion TPB.

Surprisingly, there’s not a whole lot of news this week except for one major and yet very funny misprint to the Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis Omnibus (Marvel), which I blogged about yesterday. I also go over the Shipping and Products Updates, the New Releases of the Week and my Facebook page. Lastly there are two giveaways to tell you about: The Goon: Wounded Animals TPB and Wanted TPB. Details on how to enter and win are talked about on the podcast.

Please visit my site sponsors: In-Stock Trades, Forbidden Planet International (UK), and Library Binding Company.
